RGIII out 6-8 months after total knee reconstruction

On the upside, Robert Griffin III may even be ready for training camp. [Griffin] will undergo total reconstructive surgery of his right knee early Wednesday morning to repair torn anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, but he is expected to be ready for the opener of the 2013 NFL regular season, according to team sources familiar with the determination made by orthopedic specialist Dr. James Andrews.The torn ACL was diagnosed late Tuesday as a complete tear of the patella graft that was used to repair Griffin's torn ACL suffered at Baylor in 2009. ... Griffin's recovery is projected at six to eight months, barring any setbacks, sources said. The rehabilitation plan will focus primarily on strengthening Griffin's quadriceps.

Throwaway Prediction:

RGIII will not take a single gameday snap until at least mid-way through the 2013 season.

6-8 months, for that injury, is exceedingly optismistic.

And now we see, clearly, why "lets persue a trade for Cousins" was never a real world possabillity.

Really enjoyed watching him play. I hope he comes back 100% as the remarkable rookie he was. Playing at the same high level as before.

I'm sure the fans are outraged, and want answers on how this all went down.

I'm very sorry this has happened to RGIII.

That aside, I'm SICK TO DEATH of Mark S. and all these other NFL vets talking about how fans don't get it about injuries in the NFL. Um, everyone in America could see how limited RGIII was right before he blew out his knee. He couldn't wait to get out of bounds on his sideline run.

I can understand letting him try to start the game but after he was hobbling someone should have had the sense to say, "you're injured. You can't run." and pulled him.

I know everyone bows down to Shanahan's genius, but you'd think he'd have the brains to realize how rare true, game-changing franchise QBs are in the NFL. Let's hope RGIII comes back better than ever.

Just heard a doctor on the radio say that 2/3rds of players that have this surgery are never the same. He said that Adrian Peterson was not the norm. Very sad day for all football fans. RG3 was just amazing. I guess the best Washington fans can hope for is that he is converted into strict drop back passer.

RG3 ain't the average player. He is an exceptional athlete that stands out in a sport full of them. Many guys who get this surgery are fat linemen and the likes towards the tail end of their careers. I'd say RG3 has a far better chance of recovering from the injury in a manner that AP did given his age and freak athlete nature. His body and talent level are just not like most guys playing football.

I would not be shocked one bit if he started week 1 and by week 5 or 6 was up and running like he did his rookie season.

Wow - terrible news - and for a franchise perhaps even more cursed at this point than the Jets. Mike Shanahan should seriously be canned after this utter misplay of a player. I am sure that RG3 can come back but that timetable seems as insane as having let him go so long on the knee in the first place. Shame on the Redskins.

And yes - I seriously doubt he's the same player when he returns; hopefully he can change his game enough.

Read an article on line yesterday. Thought about the Revis situation (about which I have seen nothing).
On RECENT ACL operations at the pro level:
20% NEVER play again.
Of the remainder, a 30% reduction in overall function ability is lost.
There are exceptions. Adrian Peterson who worked like an insane person. And Jerry Rice years ago - same scenario.
It is all based on the desire to rehab. Very frustrating for the injured.

It's not just the physical aspect of 'does the knee work' - it's the mental aspect of learning to trust it and relax. And I think that second part is much more of a struggle and comes along more slowly.

I just think this injury was 100% preventable. Just crazy how this has gone down.

To say RGIII won't get back to the level he was at is being a chicken little.

He re-tore his reconstructed ACL ligament.

Meaning he's going to return to the level you saw him play at and will probably come back stronger since he has the best guy in the world doing that surgery. 10 years ago I would have agreed with the ACL tear being a crippling injury. But today, dozens of athletes have shown the same burst they always had after coming back from this injury. The list is large at this point. Lets not over react.

But the ACL tears are not a death sentence anymore. Worst case the 4.3 40yd dash becomes a 4.4 or a 4.5 now. But that is plenty good enough. Regardless of what happens they need to scrap the designed QB running plays. How many times do we need to see this happen? Pocket passing will always reign supreme. Luckily for RG3 he is very capable of doing that.

I more than hope he makes it back to full strength. Not only because he's one of the most exciting players in the league but because he is one of the truly great characters in the game! His million dollar smile, the class act that he is, the down to earth mentality, everything... and he is a guy who is approachable, open, friendly. He's not a robot like Manning (or Luck who I feel goes into that direction) or a fake snake that would stab you in the back like Brady...

I really hate all the sanctimonious haters that are all up in arms over RG3 playing and calling for Shanahan's head, because I guarantee you that if he had pulled RG3 we would be having a ton of discussion comparing RG3 to Cutler and how he needed to suck it up, or bringing up how Elway played his entire career WITHOUT an ACL or Philip Rivers playing several games with a completely turn ACL( of course he has not been the same since).

It is what it is. No decision would be perfect in this situation. RG3 wanted to play and Shanahan let him. I have seen no report that states that playing the last 3 quarters made it worse and Andrews was on the sideline.

BINGO!!! And that's why you don't trade a solid back up whose making peanuts compared to what you would have to pay a back up QB with experience. Washington did well drafting qb's this year.

Shame they didn't pull him earlier when it was obvious that he couldn't really run, which is a big part of his game. Hope RG3 has a quick and successful rehab.

Griffin will be fine... These are not muscles... They are ligaments.

Where RG3 will continue to have problems is that he'll get injured again. He just has one of those bodies. It has nothing to do with taking the hits either, every QB takes hits. It's just a matter that some of them get injured more often.

I think a few people around here should avoid the prognosis theories. Had to read last summer how there was no way that Peyton Manning would be the same by a couple of clowns around here.
