Second, Coughlin was lame duck TWICE with the Giants. He got a contract extension after his final year of his contract, both being championship years. Coughlin was set to be let go both times if his teams didn't produce in the final years of his deals.

Thus, if Woody is really having "Giants-envy" then he would only extend Rex after the final year of his contract and only if the team had a good year. In that instance, the Jets job wouldn't be bad because Rex is here. He only stays if the team gets better with him as HC.
Not sure where you are getting your Giants info from.

Rex is not a lame duck. He has two years. That is stable enough by NFL standards. There is no reason to extend him with two years left on his deal.

Coughlin was never a lame duck with the Giants. He never entered a season on the final year of his deal. The Giants extended him right before the 2011 season just to avoid that. I have heard Mara speak many times on this subject. He does not like lame duck HCs. The Giants prefer to extend of fire their coach before the final year of their contracts. After the Giants won the SB, Coughlin was extended prior to the 2012 season.

They did the exact same thing with him prior to the 2007 season.

I think one of us is reading what you linked wrong.

The linked article said that Coughlin received a 1 yr extension for 2012 after his contract expired in 2011. Meaning, Coughlin was a lame duck in 2011 AND 2012, the later which was the year they won the SB. After they won the SB he received another extension.

I said that Rex would be a lame duck after 2013 so the Jets can fire him with only having to pay 1 yrs salary, with offsets.

Check the date of the article. It is July 2011. If you are right, that means the Giants had no HC under contract from January to July of 2011.

2011 was the last year of his contract. Before the 2011 season (in July) he signed a one-year extension meaning that prior to the start of the season he would have two-years left thus avoiding lame duck status.

According to the Giants, Coughlin only got a one-year extension which will take him through the 2012 season. That doesn't exactly take the heat off if the Giants have a bad season, but it gives him a little breathing room since his contract was supposed to end after this season. [2011 season]

The Giants recently gave Coughlin a one-year contract extension that takes him through 2012, but that seemed more of a formality designed to avoid forcing him to coach as a lame duck.

It's a good job but comes with the understanding that 2013 will be a very difficult season due to cap restraints and dead weight players that you may not be able to cut until 2014. Almost every team that fires its GM has issues at QB. While Rex may not be perfect, you're still inheriting a coach that won playoff games and had success even with subpar QB play. Imagine being the Panthers new GM and inheriting Ron freakin Rivera? lol

ONly the NY media could spin thoroughness and attention to detail into a negative.

Again, it may be me, but the way the article is written, it says 1 yr extension for 2012, which means that Coughlin didn't have a contract for 2012 and rather than a multiyear extension he only got a 1 year extension.

Honestly, that's the way I remember it. He was lameduck in both SB years and got big extensions afterwards.
