Weird request from my car dealer

As I have heard and read, this is the best place to go to for advice, so here it goes.

Just leased a new car, have it 2 weeks and I now get a call from the salesman asking me to send him a copy of my old car lease from a different car company. I ask him why and he says the dealer get $1000 back, but we have to get a copy of your old lease.

He then says the $1000 was taken off the price of the car (SURE.....) and I need to send the info to them ASAP. I yes him to death yesterday and this morning, he called me 4 times and left 3 meesages wanting this info.

I am uncomfortable giving him this info, because I feel it is none of his business. I don't see anything in the contract stating I need to give him this info.

What would you do??

Ditto.

Tell him you no longer have it, but are willing to go through the effort to get it if they want to split the $1000. If he agrees, ask for him to email his agreement (so you have it in writing).

First thing is why didn't he mention this when you were purchasing the car?
Then, which dealer is getting $1000 back?
Can't you can check your new lease to see if they did take the $1000 off?

Sounds a bit odd. I never heard of anything like this. If you feel like being a nice guy then you should be careful. If not, just tell him you lost it and to piss off.

I use this board all the time for medical advice. I used the info I learned here to do home surgey on myself to remove my kidney. That is how I go this new car.

I told him I don't have this info and he then tells me send him a copy of an old invoice showing the old leasing company and account number. I told him I am not at work today and will do it tomorrow. The DB then tells my to use my smartphone and take aphoto of the bill and text it to him...

"The lease is a done deal. Anything extra and I'll refer it to my lawyer."

LOL

He sounds like one of those bankers that talk you into a 7% bond fund right at the upturn of the markets, and then forgets a stupid little piece of info like your secondary ID, and is doing everything he can to get you to send him a copy of it ASAP before you change your mind, and before the end of the month so he can hit on the commission.

"Use a smartphone..." Pfft.

Ask him exactly how he's using this information, and tell him you'll do it yourself and thank him for notifying him of the issue. Watch him stammer and back pedal as he tries to get you to send him the info.

When you were leasing the car was part of the negotiation that you were leaving a competitor?

I am sure that we have someone here that has sold cars that could offer more knowledge. Assuming he is being truthful (and this is unlikely) the only thing I can think of is the possibility of a rebate being offered for customers that have migrated from another manufacturer. But I have never heard of that in my experiences. The only thing I know of is the exact opposite which is a loyalty discount.

If this is coming up out of the blue I would be wary. If you are uncomfortable and he harasses you just tell him to stop or you will report the dealership to the BBB or FTC.

this is what I'm thinking. He forgot to do something correct and it's costing him some type of commision, he just wont be honest with you because he doesnt want you to know he over charged you on one deal so he could make money.

You seem to be an Subject Matter Expert regarding mouth-breathing finger-sniffers. You favor the direct approach? This is good news.

I have troubles with these types, as well.

This could be legit.

I lost my leased car in Hurricane Sandy. GM was running a deal where they gave you $1000 off the price if you had a GM car ( I did), and an extra $500 just because. Since I went back to the same dealer, the dealer took care of the paperwork.

Did you actually get the $1000 off the price?

+1; another ham-fisted car "salesman". His sweet compensation deal is exposed because he's unorganized... Sucks for everybody.

This!

That $1,000 is pure profit to the dealer. It's a $1,000 rebate of some sort that he never told you about.

A few options...

1. Offer to Sell it to him for $900.

2. Email him a link to an eBay posting where you have it up for auction with an opening bid of...$900.

EDIT: If he puts in a bid...you then bid $905.

3. Follow green's plan...but use a hot air balloon...preferably not an Egyptian one.

4. Trade the lease paper for 3 years of free oil changes and services.
