Not only did Bustamante do that, Shakin, but he also used the N-word and nobody brought it up!

Yeah, and don't forget that the L.A. Times has been sitting on a story since 1997 about how Gray Davis verbally and physically assaulted staff members. Gee, why didn't that find ink? Hmmm...........

...and allegedly the the LA-LA Times gave away free copies the day (you guessed it!) that the "Grope" story broke. Interesting....

Sheer coincidence, 5ever.

Please understand that we are immature, phoney, stupid punks for bringing this all up.

My father-in-law was in a fury when he read how this guy lifted collection proceeds. The Catholic Church can't or won't clean up it's act until it starts hurting them in the wallet.

This guy was weird, man, weird. There were rumors that he had guns in his briefcase when I was at Oratory Prep in 1989-1992. They had to be true.

I used to do imitations of him at the dinner table because he was such a character.

Agreed 100% about the church, Bugg. I do believe there is a Lavender Mafia operating, and has been for some time. Tough to get people to admit it though or prove it. I think that the drastic drop in the amount of new priests over the last ten years or so is directly related to the relaxation of social stigmas attached to homosexuality. Think about it - if you're a gay male in 1930, 1940 or1950, what better way to go than to the church...especially if your family is "old fashioned?" Nowadays, while there is still pressure and stigma attached, it's a lot less institutionalized and it's just a lot less in general. I do think that our popular culture is drifting away from religious values and emphazing moral relativism, etc and this could cause some of a dip in recruits or perhaps even a sustained lowering...but the lack of new priests is staggering and is a huge, huge problem for the Catholic Church going forward. It has to be more than just cultural. Honestly, there used to be three or four priests for each parish in the USA, with a pastor as the head. They say that in about 10 years or so, if things don't pick up, that there will be less then one priest per parish! Every priest will be a pastor and some pastors will have to administer for multiple parishs. Additionally, the baby boom generation of priests are all going to retire soon, leaving an even bigger void and this all assumes that the rates don't drop even more! Preists used to retire at 68 or so and many of them are now being asked to work until they are 75 and older. It's a big, big problem.

I have no hard evidence that supports my homosexuality theory, it's just a hunch. But it makes intuitive sense, no?

At some point in time I really think the church will have to consider allowing more married men to become priests. A good place to start would be among the deacons. In my parish we have five of them.

FYI... In my old parish the priest is a married man. He converted from the Episcopal Church where he was a minister and ws allowed to enter the Seminary and become a Catholic Priest. The last I heard he's one of only 13 in the whole United States.

Of course my mother who is a real traditionalist is appalled. As she's said to me " There's only thirteen of these priests, and its just my luck to get one of them."

Tail - my pops would drive around looking for chuches that didn't allow female altar servers back in the early 90's when it was still "controversial." We'd go 60 minutes each way sometimes, until he finally realized that it was unstoppable!

My mother in law is very, very conservatively Catholic and won't accept the Eucharist from anyone but the priest who consecrates(sp?) it. She says she "doesn't believe" in Eucharistic ministers.
