[b] I just got done cleaning out my wife's step grandfathers house. His kids told me if I cleaned it out I could take whatever I wanted. I came across this old railroad oil lantern and was curious if anyone has any idea what the value of these things are. Also, it looks pretty rough. Alot of rust and dirt. I was going to polish it up a little before I put it on ebay but thought maybe it would be worth more as is. Anybody have any suggestions? Don't think yours is as old. But I know that a red lens would be a higher dollar item than a clear one. DO NOT clean it any more!! As with antique guns, furniture, etc. It only takes away from the value. There is no brass on yours so polishing is only going to expose rusty, pitted steel. Collectors want to see ORIGINAL finish. If it was mine I would wipe it down with a light oil(3in1!) If you want to remove some of the rust try a good quality bore cleaner (for guns) no steel wool or wire brushes. JMO!! Best of luck with it. |

[b] Well, for better or worse, I decided to take a little steel wool and knock some of the dirt and rust off of this thing. I took a picture of it, here it is. It looks like mine has more bars around the lense as well. I tried emailing the guy on that site but his email isn't working. |

Out of all the crap that I pulled out of the basement, I never would have imagined that would be the crown jewel. I realize I'm not going to get $1200 for it but I'm sure it will still be far more than I ever imagined. |

Husk
Research is the only way to find age and value. Try this site for a little more info http://www.go-star.com/antiquing/rrlanterns.htm or type in " collecting antique railroad lanterns" in google. Sorry I can't help you out more but my field is antique guns. Best of luck. |

They all want me to buy their stupid books. Sorry, I'm not going to buy a book for a lantern that could be worth $1200 or $12. |

The thing that concerns me about ebay is I'm afraid alot of the people who really know what it's worth don't even go to ebay. Some of those collectors are strange folk if you know what I mean.

He wasn't even sure what it was, other than a small part for an obviously old ham system (which his father was into years ago) He ended up getting $400.00 for it. Don't underestimate the amount of collectors looking for "finds" on Ebay...... |
