Has anyone here ever taken the ferry from New London (?) CT to Long Island? How long of a boat ride is it? How much to bring your car onboard? Anything else I should know? Any insight would be appreciated.

I have gone from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson but never from New London..I'll ask some folks here at work to see if anyone has gone from New London.

I haven't done New London to LI, but I've Bridgeport to LI quite a few times. The trip takes about 90 minutes once underway and is about $56.00 for you and the car and each aditional person around $10-15.

I'd guess the trip to North Fork about same as Port Jeff so figure same numbers or check LI Ferry

My parents take that boat every year when they head back from Mystic. It lets them stop by my sis' house for a visit. Sure beats that stretch of I-95 near New Haven.

Garbo...My wife & I did this exact trip last summer. We drove from Cape Cod to the Hamptons. The ferries saved us 2.5 hours easily. Plus, they were a lovely part of the trip. To get all the way out to the Hamptons, you actually take 3 separate ferries, but 2 of them are only 5 minutes each. Very easy.

The only way to go to Boston if you are from LI. You don't save a lot of time but the trip is much pleasurable. Any time you can avoid I-95 it's a no brainer. Plus the big boat has a pretty good bar with satellite TV.

Sooth...You DO save time because you cut out that whole Triborough Bridge/NYC traffic mess. You just like being stuck on the "Major Deegan Expressway"!!!! Admit it! You go out of your way just to drive there! You tell your young son it's YOUR parkway.

If you travel during rush hour then you definitiely save time, However coming from Huntington non-rush hour without major traffic, it's about the same time 4 1/2 hours total.

I don't take the triboro...

LIE to Throgs Neck Br. to I-95.

Jon, amazingly you know and have done everything! ;)

Since it's your old school route, help a sistah out. I've never been to to Long Island in my life.

1) This Orient Heights place - I assume it's a beachside type town? 2) how long of a drive is it to Eisenhower Park - where ever that is. 3) How many ear plugs do I need to survive a weekend of LI accents?

In JonE's absence I'll try an answer,
1)It's a real tiny place. Check w/ Sooth for better places to stay.
2)Almost the whole distance of LI, but the ferry is DEFINITELY a no-brainer.
3)You wanna talk about accents?

I would take the Ferry because it would break up the trip to Beantown in half

Drive awhile....take the boat and chill.....drive awhile....in all a longer commute

For making the best time....the drive, depending on time of day is by far the quickest route

But if you're talking Nassau County....it would be your best bet to take 95 to the Whitestone or Throggs Neck to Cross Island Parkway to the expressway!!

There raslly isn't much on the North Fork

Lots of Potato farms, winerys ect

If you took the ferry....might as well spend the night in Riverhead (most cost effective)

But if you're going to spend the night, might as well take the shuttle to Laguardia!
