France: We're Lazy, Arrogant

The French helped form the foundation of the EU, but France's power and prestige within the European superstate has been on the decline in recent years - and France has decided it has no one to blame but itself.

First, President Chirac made comments about "the waning influence of the country in European affairs," according to Britain's Guardian newspaper.

Now a French parliamentary committee has put forth a report entitled The Presence and Influence of France in Europe: True and False.

The report was authored by the National Assembly's all-party EU committee, headed by Jacques Floch, a Socialist party MP, writes Australia's The Age newspaper.

Chirac said his country's standing on the EU was "not what it should be."

The report goes further, accusing France of:

1-languishing on an EU blacklist with its "refusal to implement European Union regulations."

2-a reputation for arrogance

3-having nearly the laziest MPs in Europe, with the second-worst attendance and producing only half the normal amount of reports

4-being ignorant of the rest of Europe

5-being generally the "bad boy" of Europe, resulting in a "stained reputation" The "golden age" of French power, "in which it enjoyed political, administrative and linguistic influence" is past, said the Guardian.

For example, none of the new EU states has French as it's second language -they have all chosen English.

If France wants to right it's ship, Mr. Floch said the government in Gay Paree had "better accept its European responsibilities."

Looks like they need to spend some of that money they made in the 'food for oil' program on some image rebuilding.
