Slim-Fast Ads Shelved After Goldberg's Bush Rant
July 14, 2004
By Kathleen Sampey

NEW YORK A Slim-Fast ad campaign featuring Whoopi Goldberg was taken off the air today, the company said, following derogatory remarks the actress made about President Bush last week at a fundraiser for Democratic candidate John Kerry.

"We at Slim-Fast trust the public understands that the way in which Whoopi Goldberg chose to express her own personal beliefs at the recent fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall does not reflect the views and values of Slim-Fast," Terry Olson, general manager and vp of marketing at Slim-Fast, said in a statement released today. "Slim-Fast selected Whoopi Goldberg as its spokesperson because of her commitment to losing weight, which we applaud. We are disappointed by the manner in which Ms. Goldberg chose to express herself and sincerely regret thather recent remarks offended some of our consumers. Ads featuring Ms. Goldberg will no longer be on the air."

On July 13, The New York Post reported that the actress' "X-rated rant against President Bush at a New York fundraiser for Democrat John Kerry" offended consumers and Republican activists who began calling for a boycott of Slim-Fast.

Grey Global Group's Grey Worldwide in New York has long handled Slim-Fast weight-loss products, now owned by Unilever. Grey created the 8-month-old campaign in which Goldberg talks about her battle of the bulge and says, "Come on, if I can be a big loser, there's nothing stopping you." A Grey representative declined comment.

“I completely understand why Slim-Fast felt that they needed to respond to their consumers swiftly and promptly regarding this matter, given all the press attention it has received,” said Goldberg in a statement. “But it saddens me that people who were not present at the fundraiser, including anyone from Slim-Fast and others who have not seen the material for themselves but are only reacting to sound bites produced by the media, have opted to judge my ‘conduct.’”

The company spent $75 million in media on Slim-Fast products in 2003, per TNS Media Intelligence/CMR. From January through April 2004, it spent $25 million in media. The West Palm Beach, Fla., client could not be reached for further comment.

If you want to be an advertising spokesperson, don't go pissing off a large fraction of the public. Ask former MCI spokesman Danny Glover.

There's a good reason Michael Jordan never endorses a political candidate-"Republicans buy sneakers too"

Man. You cons cry like Giants fans who didn't get a pass interference call.

What a bunch of little girls. Unbelievable.

BTW - even though Goldberg was right, seeing less of her on TV is just fine with me.

Slimfast is not that stupid, I guarantee there's a behavioral clause in that contract that allows them to recoup that money. Making commerials is not cheap (believe me I'm in the business).

She can kiss any future endorsments goodbye, that's "getting her due" especially seeing the only future she has in film is in a Michael Moore flick.

Bob, as someone in the business I can tell you with relative certainty that pulling her ads hurts her in the pocket book. No one gets it all up front as a celeb spokesperson, and there's always a conduct clause. Just ask Kobe Bryant.

It's also damaging to her future prospects as a celeb endorser. Once a high-profile client like Slim-Fast dumps you for whatever reason, you're pretty much radioactive, whether rightly or wrongly so.

On a related note, reports are that her "in question" rant had her comparing Bush to the female anatomy. With a name like Bush, it's not too tough to figure out where her rant went.

That being said, and all things being equal, as far as I can recall (anyone remember the Newlywed Game?), the term "making whoopie" means to eff to the U and the C K.

So using the crack whore's own logic; Whoopi = f**k. So here's to you Whoopi, you dumb f**k.

Whoopi Goldberg is a big fat WH*RE...hahahahahaha, j/k I never really found her humorous at all and to be quite honest....she is nasty looking. So why did Slimfast use her? Maybe because she would appeal to a broader ethnic audience.

Slimfast is better off not having her on as a spokeswoman.

Hilarious....like Ms. No Talent Whoopi is the first person ever to make a Bush (as in Vagina) joke. Or a Dick & Bush (as in Pres and VP) = Dick and Bush (as in Male and Female Genitalia) jokes.

Any weapon in a fight right?

This is why I hate politics and politicians. Are we debating Welfare or School Vouchers or Gay Marriage Rights or taxation or Govt. Spending or anything relevant??

Nope. We debate Bush/Vagina jokes and Kerry Haircut cost complaints. Great, really crushing the issues, eh?

No...it's about hypocrisy.

Were any conservative(s) (entertainer or otherwise) to go off like that at a fund raiser where a Republican candidate sat there, laughed then walked off with millions of dollars the rhetoric from the left would've been ten-fold.

Laugh as hard as you want...I was all for Trent Lott being forced to step down as SOH after his comments, as was the President for that matter.

As far as hatred, the left (both entertainers and politicians) have taken that to a new level. While conservatives disdained clinton while in office they put America first- you can't say the same about the libs today.

CBTNY, you really can't believe that? The Right was on Clinton like stink on you know what from day one!

Yeah they really put America first, wasting 70 million dollars of taxpayers moneh to investigate Whitewater, trying to implicate Clinton in the death of Vince Foster and Ron Brown. Accusing him of "Wagging the Dog" when he bombed Al Queda camps in Afganistan or when he Bombed the Sudan after our embassies had been attacked or Iraq for violating UN regulations regarding WMDs. Yeah, they really had America foremost on their minds.

Of course let's not forget the entire impeachment fiasco for lying "under oath" about having sex with an intern. Now THAT is certainly an impeachable offense! (The rest of the world thought we had gone insane...)

Maybe if the focus was a little more on the international and domestic threat of terrorism and less on destroying Bill Clinton, maybe, we would have been better equipped to thwart Al Queda in the years and months to come. Of course eveyone wants to blame Clinton 9-11 which happened year after he left office but gives him no credit of thwarting the numerous attempts that took place under his watch.

There is great film called "The Hunting of The President" and in it you will see former Republican operatives admitting all of the things they were doing to discredit and bring down Clinton during his 8 years in office. I encourage everyone to see it regardless of party and ideology. If we truly hold the office of the Presidency sacred then we must make sure this never happens again.

BW, I can't stand Whoopie Goldberg and never really have. Slim Fast can hire or fire who ever they choose but they need to understand that there are also fat Democrats too who need to lose weight too!

Next thing you'll be here spouting views from the Moveon production of "Outfoxed" next week.

As far as focusing on the threat of terror; it's been well documented that if clinton could not read OBL his Miranda rights before taking him into custody he was making no attempt to capture him.

If you could see beyond labels for once and actually look at the record you will see that Clinton did more to fight terrorism than any previous administration before him. Could he have done more? In the context of a post 9-11 world, sure. Still regardless of what you have to say about him, there were no Terrorist attacks on American soil, by foreign Terrorists during his watch (and that is not because they didn't try) with the exception of the first WTC bombing that occured during his first month or so in office. (Which if we use the same rationale as many conservatives, we should be blaming on Bush and Reagan....)

His outgoing Chief of Staff told the Bush Administration that Al Queda and counter-terrorism would be it's most important national security issue. Yet, this President spent 40% of his time on a "working vacation" in Crawford, TX, dismissing the warnings of his Counter-Terrorism Czar, Richard Clark as well as Rand Beers.

He gets a PDB in August, 2001 entitled, "Bin Laden Determined to Strike inside U.S." and he files it under "historical information" and then goes fishing.

Even after the first plane hit the WTC barely a month later, he doesn't put two and two together and cancel a meaningless photo op. Instead, he goes in, is informed that another plane has hit and still sits there for 7 more additional minutes, DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

And you have the nerve to criticize Clinton?? I can only imagine what you would say if it was Clinton and not Bush who was in office.

Even Paul Bremer said this administration was not focused enough on Terrorism. Bush is truly the Teflon President; he is not responsible for anything that happens on his watch. It is the CIA's fault, the previous administration, the liberals (afterall, they don't share America's values) etc. Fortunately, a large portion of the populace is finally waking up and will do something Bush refuses to do; hold him accountable in November.
