Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Aug 1 (IANS) Tanzania has confirmed Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, detained by Pakistani police, is one of three suspects involved in the 1998 car bomb attack at the US embassy here, Xinhua reports.

The foreign ministry issued a statement Saturday saying Ghailani is a Tanzanian national from Kiembesamaki in Zanzibar. He was born March 19, 1974, on the Indian Ocean island, and uses the aliases of Abubakar Khalfan Ahmed and Shariff Omar Mohamed Ahmed Mfupi.

A twin car bombing attack Aug 7, 1998, had killed a total of 224 people and injured more than 5,000 at Nairobi in Kenya and Dar es Salaam.

Ghailani is suspected to have bought the truck that carried the bomb for the US embassy blast that killed 11 Tanzanians.

He was nabbed by Pakistani police after a shoot-out at Gujrat, 160 km east of capital Islamabad. Ghailani is also on the US Federal Bureau of Investigation's most wanted list.

His co-suspects include Khalifan Khamis Mohamed and Rashid Salehe. Mohamed is now serving life imprisonment in the US, while Salehe is standing trial in Tanzania.
