If this goes through, give the ChiSox their rings right now

Source: ChiSox 'extremely close' to Soriano deal
    ESPN.com news services

The White Sox are "extremely close" to trading for Nationals outfielder Alfonso Soriano, a source close to the situation told ESPN The Magazine's Tim Kurkjian. The Nationals have great interest in pitcher Brandon McCarthy.

The White Sox, said the source, also are close to acquiring pitcher Mike MacDougal from the Royals in exchange for minor league pitcher Tyler Lumsden.

Soriano joined Washington last offseason in a trade from Texas, and the Nationals shifted him from second base to left field. Soriano is batting .288 with 31 homers, 62 RBI and 25 steals.

The slugger is scheduled to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

wow, that is huge... the ChiSox have one hell of a team already. You're right, Soriano would be the nail in the AL's coffin.

I don't know about that. The White Sox would certainly be the favorites on paper, but on paper they should be destroying the Tigers right now, not sitting 6.5 games back. Heck, they might not even make the playoffs unless they start playing better, they're only 2.5 games up on the wild card.

Chicago has 7 games left against Detroit, with the middle-of-the-order they'd have with Soriano, I can't see them losing more than 2 of those games. Figure they'll win a few more games than they would WITHOUT Soriano, and there's no reason they couldn't catch Detroit.

I've been thinking the same thing for the past few months, but Detriot keeps proving me wrong. If they can last this long, they might be able to hold off Chicago completely.

Its really hard to get alot for him cause most likely the team that trades for him is just renting him..

Thats why nobody is blowing them away with offers..

How can you give up the farm if the guy wont be on your team the year after..

If he had years on his contract left teams would be offering much more.

If there were better deals out there im sure they would go get them..Given the fact that Soriano is a goner after seasons end they better get something..

Francesa's on the FAN saying the whole league's in love with McCarthy. He's 23 and supposedly loaded with potential.

Brandon McCarthy is their best pitching prospect. They did pretty well considering he can become a FA after the season.

if Jim Bowden is smart, hes using the White Sox to pry Zumaya or Sanchez from the Tigers in their package, he can get a bidding war going between the top 2 AL Centreal teams....also the Twins want Carlos Lee, which the Brewers are prepared to trade.

Chicago is scared of Minnesota. They are coming and coming hard. The White sox are desperate to do something. They have alot of quality teams chasing them like Minnesota, The Yankees and even The Blue Jays. Not to mention that they are trying to catch Detroit in that division.

If this goes through, then by the end of the year, the White Sox will end up with 5 players with 30+ HRs. I wonder if that is a record.

    HRs right now:

    Jim Thome (32)
    Jermaine Dye (25)
    Paul Konerko (24)
    Joe Crede (20)
    Alfonso Soriano (31)

They also have a shot of 4 players hitting 40.

Minnesota is a real threat right now, and probably the Yankees as well. I'm not sold on the Blue Jays until they get some real consistency out of their rotation besides Halladay.

Minny has the best 1-2 punch in the league right now..And they are both lefties..Scary!!

Detroit is in win now mode. No way they're trading Zumaya. Sanchez? Maybe.

As good and as promising as McCarthy is, he's not integral to the White Sox like Zumaya is to Detroit.

Wow, Dye, Konerko, Thome and Soriano would be a devastating middle of the lineup.
