NEW YORK -- Outfielder Shawn Green reportedly was traded from the Arizona Diamondbacks to the New York Mets on Tuesday night, giving the NL East leaders one more big bat as they gear up for the postseason.
Two team officials familiar with the trade confirmed the deal to The Associated Press, while a baseball source told MLB.com that Green had been dealt along with cash considerations to the Mets.
According to MLB.com, Green arrived at AT&T Park in San Francisco on Tuesday and was seen hugging teammate Craig Counsell and a Diamondbacks coach, signifying he was saying goodbye.
Green is batting .283 with 11 homers and 51 RBI this season.
I think this is a good move. It hedges their bet if Floyd is out for an extended period of time, and if Floyd comes back or not, this gives them another OF bat for the playoffs (so you're not hoping Chavez and Milledge get it done as your corner OFers. Plus you could DH Floyd if you make the World Series. Solidifies the bench as an added bonus. Essentially this replaces Nady with Green in RF. Green and Delgado are close friends - maybe this helps both players. Green could play RF next year, Milledge in LF. Green keeps RF warm for Carlos Gomez in late 2007 or 2008. Lots of positives.
I will be interested in seeing how much of the salary the Mets are responsible for.
