STOP THE PRESSES: SHEVA GETS A GOAL! (ESPN Premiership Roundup 10/22)

Premiership round-up: Chelsea back on top
    Joe Duggan

Andriy Shevchenko finally scored his first Stamford Bridge goal and then perhaps understandably was booked for over-celebrating. Michael Ballack headed Chelsea's second past the otherwise excellent David James after great work by Drogba and Robben. Benjani netted for Portsmouth but Chelsea withstood some late Pompey pressure to see out the game and go back to the top of the table.

The pressure on Stuart Pearce is mounting as his Manchester City side slumped to a 4-0 mauling at the hands of Wigan. Goals from the impressive Heskey, a Dunne own goal, Valencia and Camara gave the home side three points which lifts them above City who were booed off the pitch by their furious fans.

At Goodison Park, Mikael Arteta got Everton off the mark with his second of the season. James Beattie then doubled the lead with a penalty after a challenge on Andrew Johnson by Claude Davis which saw the Sheffield United man shown a red card. Neil Warnock switched to three up front in the second half but it was not enough to pierce the Everton defence.

There were no goals in the bottom of the table clash between Charlton and Watford which saw Ben Foster in fine form again as the on-loan keeper made important stops from Andy Reid and Darren Bent. There were chances at either end in the second half as the defensive frailties that have left both teams struggling this season were much in evidence.

Aston Villa took on Fulham in a later kick-off and Martin O'Neill's side will be disappointed to record yet another draw. A controversial first half penalty for Villa was confidently struck home by Barry as, much to the relief of the home crowd, Angel watched from a safe distance. Volz struck a low drive for the equaliser meaning Fulham are now unbeaten in four on their travels.
