Yeah there is no way that he had the same mark, same spot, in three separate starts...Unless he rubs his hands in mud before/during every game...But it sure looks like this is a fishy situation...And it seems the umpires let him off the hook...

He pitched 8 scoreless innings after the smudge was removed. A little payback to the Cards for harboring a cheater for years.

pine tar is like tree sap, even if you wash off most of it (the coloring, mostly), a clear sticky residue remains

it affects the rotation of the ball coming out off of your fingers. he could theoretically put a wicked curve or slider or whatever on a ball loaded up with pine tar that he would not usually be able to do.

    True.

But I think this detracts from the other signs of his "cheating". A week before the season, his fastball tops out at 87 MPH. In the postseason his fastball hits 93 MPH. The guy is in his 40s but gains 6 MPH on his fastball in less than a month? He's screaming on the mound now, also in the dougout as well as being waaaayyy hyper.

Seriously, those are signs of someone using steroids. He could have shot up right before the postseason started and no one would know as MLB has finished testing for the season.

Not disagreeing with this, but how could he be so stupid to leave that wad of crap on his hand if a clear sticky residue will do the trick?

One of our local radio stations had Gaylord Perry on the other day. Gaylord said he was cheering him on when he saw the pine tar. It was pretty funny.
