Maine Police Arrest Activist Dressed as Bin Laden
Maine Police Arrest Activist Dressed as Bin Laden
    Tuesday, October 31, 2006

PORTLAND, Maine The lawyer who divulged President Bush's drunken-driving arrest days before the 2000 election was arrested at gunpoint Tuesday over a Halloween stunt.

Tom Connolly was wearing a terrorist costume complete with a plastic assault rifle while trying to make a political statement for passing motorists on Interstate 295 in South Portland, police said. They arrested him Tuesday morning and charged him with criminal threatening, a misdemeanor. Initial cash bail was set at $540.

Connolly was wearing an Usama bin Laden outfit replete with a plastic dynamite belt, plastic grenades and a replica of an AK-47 assault rifle, police said.

He carried a sign that said "I love TABOR," a reference to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights on the ballot in Maine on Nov. 7. But South Portland Police Chief Ed Googins said one of the people who saw it thought it said "I love the Taliban."
What's there to discuss? Typical liberal, dressed in the garb of the only other group on the planet whose ideals and goals align almost seamlessly with those of the left.

What's to discuss? There's no defending arresting someone for being in a Halloween outfit.

He should have played that TABOR/Taliban angle with greater verve.

Lets see him do that in Manhattan.

That's the first thing I thought. If it's so funny and ok then why doesn't he go do it in NYC. Depending on how real the weapons looked it would go over well anywhere.

How is this even a political protest? The guy just sounds like a typical liberal moron with a very loose grasp on our current geo-political situation.

He doesn't happen to have an alias of Yellow Submarine, does he?

I think you highlighted the wrong words, so lets try that again:

The man wasn't threatening anybody, and anyone who thinks Osama Bin Laden would be standing by the side of the road in New Hampshire with a sign referencing a proposed tax law amendment doesn't have the brains to drive a car in the first place.

If the things looked real, the police were within their rights to tell him to leave because he was scaring people. But arresting him for "criminal threatening"??? Who was he threatening? Who did he intend to threaten?

Sorry, Weeb, but you don't have a leg to stand on.

The fact is, it was idiotic, and it wasn't funny, and he wouldn't have the guts to do it in NYC (I hope). But however repugnant it was, it wasn't criminal

Correction - he did nothing illegal

Too many people here have conflated the two - you from the left and others from the right.

The fact that it wasn't illegal does not mean that it wasn't wrong.

And the fact that it was wrong doesn't mean that it was illegal.

Agreed, I meant nothing as far as breaking the law.

I don't see any humor in this act. The cop should have just punched him out.
    This is tasteless.

My point was it would be illegal if the guns looked real, like this fake.

I think it's illegal. If it's not you might not want to walk around the street carrying one.
