    Mota Suspended 50 games

Just heard he tested positive for steroids. He's not a Met anymore...filed for free agency. But now it's obvious where his turnaround came from this season.

No surprise... My guess is the Mets would have signed him had he not been caught cheating.

    hello Octavio Dotel?

Minaya supposedly wanted Dotel last year as the setup man, and Heilman is probably getting traded

Drug violation nets Mets pitcher Mota 50-game banAssociated Press

NEW YORK -- Relief pitcher Guillermo Mota was suspended 50 games on Wednesday for violating Major League Baseball's drug policy.

The 33-year-old Mota, who finished the season with the Mets and filed for free agency Tuesday, was 4-3 with a 4.53 ERA this season. In the National League playoffs, he went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA in seven appearances.

His suspension will take effect for the start of the 2007 season.

Did baseball institute a drug policy recently? I vaguely remember conversation about it; the reason I ask is 50 seems like a lot of games, this must not be his first offense.

I think Plan B just came into effect - keep Heilman, resign Bradford, hope Sanchez comes back healthy.

Heck, I might even consider resigning Mota on the cheap for the 112 games he WOULD be available to pitch, depending on what the failed test was for. And as long as they kept a close eye on him.

    Wow that sucks....

Need to resign Bradford, with Heilman and Sanchez we're good.

Mota would've been great to keep too, but not now. Maybe Dotel since I think the Yanks have had enough of him, but I think he has alot to offer (if he stays healthy).

Darren Oliver is a free agent. We should pay him.

Need to re-sign Bradford or Oliver or maybe put EL Duque in the Oliver role and on a side note I hope we strengthen the bench.

Exactly. Unhappy or not, Heilman will almost definitley be sticking around, unless there's a trade that really appeals to Minaya.

I didn't know he was a free agent. Definitely need to resign him... dependable, long relief guy.

This is a little off topic, but....

Does anyone think if Mota wasn't busted and then was resigned, Heilman gets a shot at a starting rotation spot ??

I think we would've been pretty set with Bradford, Mota, Sanchez, and Wagner in the bullpen and Heilman would've gotten a shot. But now with the Mota situation... it looks like he's screwed.

up until 2005 it used to be first offense 10 games i think. but congress was putting an awful lot of pressure on mlb to come up with a stricter policy or risk having them intervene. now i believe it's 1st offense 50 games, 2nd offense 100, 3rd offense lifetime ban.......which i think is more than fair.

Hmm, do you guys know what happened to Juan Padilla? Is he coming back from his surgery? Is he still a met?

He was a good, solid pitcher, and he would really boost our bullpen even more

No way. Sanchez will be back for the 8th inning, and we'll just find and sign somebody for the 7th Inning. Possibly Octavio Dotel who should do better when not being rushed back from Injury like the Yankees tried.

By the time we signed Mota, we had already buried the Braves.
