    Mets Hot Stove thread

Very nice summary... hope you keep it updated if you have a chance.

One thing that stood out for me: I know this would never happen but...

Barry Bonds - minor interest. This should be ZERO interest. There is no way in hell I want him to be a Met. I would boo him all year long.

I'd like to see the Mets put their money from the Japenese pitcher bid towards Soriano. Make the lineup as powerful as possible and let the young pitchers we have develop with a powerhouse lineup. Also would like to see a Milledge and Heilman package for Willis happen.

At his blog for the Journal News, John Delcos quotes Mets GM Omar Minaya as saying the Mets have made a proposal to free-agent OF Cliff Floyd, as well as to free-agent RHP Chad Bradford.

Mussina resigned with the Yanks to a two-year deal, so he's off the table.

Heath Bell? The 4A player of the year?

Ring I don't mind, but whatever.

I don't know a thing about Jon Adkins, but Ben Johnson isn't terrible.

Bell is terrible, Ring is mediocre... I dunno Adkins either, Ben Johnson was a big-time prospect a couple years ago and is a well-built athlete.

Meantime, reports out of Florida say the Mets are engaged in active discussions with the Florida Marlins for the services of Dontrelle Willis, with Aaron Heilman and Lastings Milledge as the main pieces in any deal.

Well, after speaking with two MLB officials, we've been able to confirm a few phone calls between hotel suites, but not much else, except for one interesting note. Milledge is a player that Florida “likes”, but they “love” Fernando Martinez, and if the Mets include him in any deal, it'll get done.

I am reporting this for the simple reason that this detail tells me that no deal will get done, because Minaya has no intention of including Martinez in any deal for any player.

"Minaya has other guys in his system that he's willing to deal, but not that kid. No way/”

    Other Notes of interest:
The Mets are being insistent in trade talks that Phil Humber and Mike Pelfrey are not available, “so stop asking”. ... Free Agent INFs that would be considered bench players (like Craig Counsell) are rebuffing the Mets' plans to sign them because “they'll never play with Wright and Reyes playing every day?'...First base prospect Michel Abreu is “definitely” in the clubs plans for 2007. ... Edgardo Alfonzo and Octavio Dotel are being considered as non-roster ST invitees, and the club may contact former Met Lee Mazzilli about it's vacant third base coaching spot.

Martinez is from the Dominican Republic, lefty-hitting OF with tremendous contact hitting, power hitting and athleticism... hit .279 in the minors this year. We acquired him at age 16 and he's now 18 and doing very well. He very well could be our best prospect by far and is getting comparisons to Bobby Abreu.

At Baseball Prospectus, Kevin Goldstein describes Mets OF Fernando Martinez as, "among the highest-ceiling players in the game."

Buster Olney writes that the time may finally be right for the Red Sox to trade OF Manny Ramirez, who has two years and roughly $40 million left on his deal.

The logic being, that in a market ready to give free-agent OF Alfonso Soriano, or OF Carlos Lee, close to $15 million per year over seven years, acquiring Ramirez for just two years, and a few million dollars more per season, may be viewed as a bargain.

Olney describes the Mets as a perfect fit for Boston, noting that Ramirez has long wanted to play in Queens, while at the same time the Mets have a wide-open void in left field.

He writes that a deal such as Aaron Heilman and Lastings Milledge for Ramirez would work for both sides.
