Live Earth: Confusing, contradictory, and controversial

The big concert starts today, so if Global Warming is your enemy, hop into a bus or on a plane and rock out against it!

I didn't know they moved the last concert to Giants Stadium, which will take place tomorow afternoon. As if Jersey shore traffic on the turnpike south won't be bad enough. But all that smog from the cars will be for a good cause.

IT may be the biggest, longest and most viewed pop concert in history. It may also be the most confusing, controversial and contradictory.

Live Earth, which starts and involves hundreds of stars, will beseech us to help save the environment.

But the sheer magnitude of the event necessitates flying thousands of people around the world - not exactly great news for the ozone layer.

If such green issues have some people seeing red, there's no denying that Live Earth will, by definition, rank with 1985's Live Aid and 2005's Live 8 as one of the must-see - or at least must-comment-on - events of all time.
It hasn't been without it's problems. A last-minute crisis was avoided when organiser, former US vice president Al Gore, convinced authorities in Rio de Janeiro to press ahead with their leg despite safety concerns.

And after being initially rebuffed by Washington, Gore's concerts also found a last-minute home in the US capital on Friday after Native Americans offered their museum for the worldwide event.

A few blocks from the US Capitol where some Republican lawmakers had tried to prevent the Washington concert from taking place, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian will host one of the many global concerts highlighting climate change.

“A couple of global warming naysayers used parliamentary tricks in the Congress to block that,” Gore said on CNN.

“Well, instead of the cavalry riding to the rescue, the American Indians came to the rescue.”

Concert promoters initially sought the expansive National Mall as its US venue, but two groups already had permits for that space, forcing Live Earth to find another location.

Gore turned to friends in Congress in hopes of getting the Capitol lawn but some Republicans blocked legislation to permit it.

That bumped the concert to the 80,000-seat Giants Stadium in New Jersey, just across the Hudson River from Manhattan.

In contrast, the space at the American Indian museum's plaza, where the concert will be held, can only hold about 200, but video screens will be set up for larger crowds to gather across the street near the Capitol reflecting pool.

The museum had already scheduled a concert called “Mother Earth” to coincide with the Live Earth events, but expanded that in the last few days to include Gore and more performers.

Gore will kick off the Washington concert with a speech on climate change that will be followed by performances by popular married country singers Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood and Native Roots, a reggae band from Albuquerque, New Mexico.

The former vice president has become a global voice on climate change, warning of a “planetary emergency” and calling for US emissions of carbon dioxide, the largest source of the greenhouse gas, to be frozen at current levels.

Other Live Earth concerts will be held in Rio de Janeiro, London, Sydney, Johannesburg, Tokyo, Shanghai, Hamburg, Germany, and New Jersey, and broadcast worldwide.

Unlike most major Live Earth concerts elsewhere, the Washington event will be free.

To add to the sprawl, Live Earth offers scores of "entry points" .

On the internet, http://www.liveearth.msn.com will feature every second of the event, from tonight's kick-off in Sydney to the last dregs at Giants Stadium in New York.

You can view each of the eight cities involved with just a click.

The participating acts will be available for viewing at your leisure for several days afterwards.
are they going to use solar energy to power the amplifiers or electric??? are the acts going to bicycle to the stadiums or take limo's?? will the wrappers from the hot dogs, beer, soda's be recycled or thrown in a garbage dump??? will the lights in the stadium be global warming friendly??? will people at the shows be disallowed from smoking (cigarettes that is) to reduce the potential of global warming???

and most importantly; will cheryl crowe make sure attendants are at the entrance to each bathroom handing people a single square of TP as they walk in??? etc....etc....etc..

Jesus guys...Its just a bunch of clueless celebrities and their equally clueless fans trying to get together to something they perceive as good for the world. Is it ironic? Of course...

Why do Republican soldiers get all up in arms when people try to do things they think is "good" for the planet? I just don't understand how the party that has consistently portrayed itself as the party of God and religious folk has no problem taking a dump all over Gods most amazing creation of all...the Earth.

    Are celebrities idiots? Yes

Is raising awareness of global warming by driving to a concert that eats up huge amounts of energy kinda stupid? Absolutely

because like hypocritical liberal politicians who preach conservation yet rack up electric bills of $13k a year, the particians from la-la land expect everyone to use one square of toilet paper or pack 25 people in a car while they drive around in stretch limos or dump the waste from their luxury touring bus into the chicago river....

the promoter compared this to "8 Super Bowls or 8 World Cups in one day"....except for the first Super Bowl I don't know of a SB or World Cup game where more than half the stadium was empty...

So because celebrities are hypocritical...that makes it allrightythen to deface Gods foremost creative work.

Because Sheryl Crow wants us to use one square a day that makes it ok to slash and burn the Amazon or leech copper out of the ground in Montana using chemicals?

You're hatred for liberals obscures your focus on the big picture. You are getting borderline to having the same problem that people with BDS have. Don't sink to that level, CBTNY.

that's the hilarity of the lunatic left...they assume since you don't agree with their assertion on man made global warming you are automatically a polluter who could care less about the state of the enviroment....

yet when pointing out the obvious hypocrisy of many of these people you are "sinking to their level"....here's a great read on it (http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=070706021032.ksj41dz9&show_article=1)

they had these little infomercials during the concert yesterday about what you could do to help save energy and help the enviroment...one of them was turning lights off when no one's in the room... jeez....I woulda never thoughta that one....

    No way...

Personally, I think the global warming movement is a load of crap. Let me reiterate...I believe that man made global warming is a hoax. A hoax perpetuated by people with ulterior motives. I believe warming is natural, caused by the sun and the earths cycles.

Now...do I believe that pumping the atmosphere full of carbon monoxide is good? No

I think that when it comes to this jewel of a planet we have hanging in space that we should "err on the side of caution". Much the same argument people use for those terrible terrible terrorists that have as much of a chance of killing you as peanuts or your neighbors swimming pool.

CBTNY, your apparent dislike for your fellow countrymen who have differing political opinions from you is astounding. Do you really think that the majority of people who have been swayed by purveyors of non truth such as Al Gore and Sheryl Crow and Bono are bad people? Do you think that most of those people just want to see the beauty of the earth preserved for their children and their children's children?

Yes, the people controlling the message are huge hypocrites...just like every politician that has ever walked the earth.

You seize upon obvious hypocrisy like a starving shark on a wounded herring. That's freaking great. But don't you think that the past 16 years of dumb ass partisan bickering needs to stop for the benefit of the country? Can't you find a common ground with the deceived global warming followers? Why can't the people in this country put their differences aside and work to make a better world instead of just endlessly feeding the cycle of buffoonery that has plagued this country for far too long? Would it be really so bad if smog didn't envelope the cities on our eastern seaboard?

Cmon bro...we are all citizens of the same country. We are supposed to work together, not find every iota of difference and beat each other over the head relentlessly with it.

different political opinions??? more like a severe dislike for those who claim "practice what I preach...not what I practice"....

it's classic and justification of it happens here every day....people justify john edwards making $55K from a college to speak about the pooor....or claim it doesn't matter algore spends $13K annually on his electric bill, his words are a good thing for the enviroment....give me a fuqin break...

partisan bickering??? you mean like the rats telling us for half a decade sadaam had WMD and was a threat, then going to the floor of congress to authorize use of force only to claim the president "lied" when things get tough...

or claiming the president "outsourced" our security in tora bora while they sat on their asses for five years when obl openly declared war on America and carried out attacks???

the rats have gone to all extreme's to grab power and they don't care what they leave in their wake....from comparing the investigators at Gitmo to the nazi's, pol pot and those who ran the soviet gulags....to covicting US Marines of killing civilians in cold blood before a single charge had been dropped...to claiming "if you do your work you go to college, otherwise you end up in Iraq" as though only the brain dead serve in the military...to a plagirist senator calling the president "brain dead"...

so please- before you start giving me homilies, a poster on the political forum of a football site, right to your local representative and tell them your story...

Actually it is for support of the families who have lost loved ones over seas. If that makes me a low life, what does it make you?
