Jim Webb rips into Flimsy Graham (video/text)

http://www.crooksandliars.com/2007/07/15/jim-webb-rips-into-graham-for-putting-political-words-in-our-soldiers-mouths/

Lindsay Graham sounded like he was on a pot of coffee, seven Red Bulls and a couple of packs of cigarettes—while being fluent at the Evelyn Wood talking points course. Jim Webb was not thrilled to be sitting next to him.

Webb: Lindsey’s had a hard month…excuse me friend…

And he got angry when Graham, (McCain’s BFF) tried to put words in the mouths of our soldiers

Webb: Don’t put political words in their mouths…

No wonder Republicans are afraid of Webb. Here’s some highlights:

Graham: “The surge has been in place for two weeks” Webb: “we didn’t
do that in two weeks”

—–

Webb: “It’s been a hard month Lindsey, hasn’t it?”

—–

Webb: “Lindsey’s had a hard month. These people who have gathered
around the President, you know, on the immigration bill and this bill,
I know it’s been tough. We gotta bring people together …”

——

Webb: “We’re now in a situation where the soldiers and the Marines are
having less than a one to one ratio [time at home versus time at war],
and somebody needs to speak up for them instead of simply defending
what this President …”

Graham: “Well, they reenlist in the highest numbers anywhere than the…”

Webb: “This one thing I really take objection to is politicians …”
Lindsey keeps interrupting

Webb: “May I speak? … Is politicians who put their political views
in the mouths of soldiers. You can look at poll after poll and the
political views of the United States military are no different than
the country writ large. Go take a look at the New York Times today.
Less than half of the military believes that we should have been in
Iraq in the first place.”

Graham: “Have you ever been to Iraq? Have you ever been?”

Webb: “Have you ever been to these … I’ve covered two wars as a
correspondent.”

cross-talk

Graham: “Have you been to Iraq and talked to the soldiers?”

Webb: “You know, you haven’t been to Iraq Lindsey. (cross-talk).
You go see the dog and pony show. That’s what Congressman do.”

cross talk

Webb: “I’ve been a member of the military more than the Senators been
a Senator.”

———
Webb: “35% of the United States military agrees with the policy of
this President.”

Graham: “Well, why do they keep reenlisting? Why do they go back?”

Webb: “Because they love their country. (cross-talk) They do not do
it for political reasons. Believe me, my family’s been doing this
since the Revolutionary War.”

Graham: “Yea? Well so has my family.”

Webb: “They do it because they love their country. They do it because
they have a tradition, and it is the responsibility of our national
leaders so make sure that they are used properly.”

what's funny is this is another case of dumbdawg relying on lunatic leftist sites for his copy and paste info.....

25% of the transcript which took place during this actual segment (the one posted as in lines left ou, not what was said prior to or after this) was purposely left out...if you read the transcript it is scary how stupid Webb is to the actual facts...

the fact another rat politician is saying "go look at the Times...go look at the Times" yet again is proof of this and rather telling...

Jim Webb's son is in Iraq. I think he gets the facts a lot better the Lindsay Graham does.

He quoted because it was released that morning. Earlier polls done by other pollsters, like Zogby, have said the same thing.

Here's a Zogby poll from last year as an example:

http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=1075
An overwhelming majority of 72% of American troops serving in Iraq think the U.S. should exit the country within the next year, and more than one in four say the troops should leave immediately, a new Le Moyne College/Zogby International survey shows.

The poll, conducted in conjunction with Le Moyne College’s Center for Peace and Global Studies, showed that 29% of the respondents, serving in various branches of the armed forces, said the U.S. should leave Iraq “immediately,” while another 22% said they should leave in the next six months. Another 21% said troops should be out between six and 12 months, while 23% said they should stay “as long as they are needed.”
Demographically speaking, I suppose most of troops would fall in so-called Generation Y.

I wouldn't denigrate them as whiners, though.

If somebody sent me someplace to risk my life, and I later found out the reasons for doing so were totally BS, I'd complain too.

Here's a secret: Webb mentioned that Graham was full of beans because he had never visited Iraq. Graham then informed Webb that he had, in fact, been there seven times. Webb then slandered Graham's visits as mere photo ops. That's about all we need to know about Webb the debator. Despite JD's confident thread title, Webb made an ass of himself.

I guess different things resonate with different people.

To me, the defining point was when Webb asserted that military men and their families are unhappy with the war, and backe dup that view with polling. Graham disagreed, citing only the absence of mass defections, as if our troops only followed orders they liked.

On one side: Attributed fact.
On the other: Nonsensical rhetorical questions.

of course that would be the defining point to you...

the fact only certain comments made by webb were cherrypicked for the article, while other beligerent statements he made were completely dismissed wouldn't factor in for someone like you...
