WAY OT: My Transmission is Shot. Need a decent USED CAR...

any advice, tips... anyone selling anything reliable for cheap? (under $4000)

My 97 Acura CL 3.0 with 196,000 miles on it just crapped out on me this past weekend.

I have to choose whether to get a rebuild on the tranny, or buy a used car.

    It's an 97 Acura CL 3.0

The car has been great to me over the last 5 years.

Whats your main requirement for a used car, just reliability and price?
Honda Civic might be your best bet, but for that money you'd be looking at one with probably over 100k miles...if so make sure the timing belt was replaced.

Yea, price is the main concern. I know that I'm not gonna get something reliable for that cheap. I was planning on getting a new car in the fall. I just need something to last me until then.

So realistically 3000 is what you'd spend? Id jump on craigslist first to see whats out there...

Heres a decent 2000 Accord with 79k for 3500...Id jump on it! ;)

Damn thats another steal if you ask me...

I'd bet you could put 20000 miles on it and still sell it back for 2600....

    Good luck bro.

We put my wife's Civic on craigslist (until she waffled and had me remove it) and we got a ton of inquiries about it.
I'd move on it if you could...just sayin'...;) :D

Try and see if you can get a used/rebuilt tranny from a nearby auto-wreckers and have a mechanic install it for you on the cheap.

    That's what I would do.

I don't the phrase 'mechanic' and 'on the cheap' have ever been used in a sentence....probably not even worth the trouble, imo...

You're probably right. But he did say that the car has been great to him. And unless you're getting a vehicle that is certified by it's maker as a used car, isn't that the same as buying somebody elses problems???

True, but he also has to get rid of it later in the year anyway.
The two examples I had posted are historically reliable cars that should hold their value. It'd be easier to trade in or sell those cars ( a 2000 Accord or 99 Civic) than a '97 Acura with 200k on it...again, just my opinion...

Absolutely. I was thinking more along the lines of running that sucker into the ground once he put the other tranny in. lol

The mechanic will re-build my trans for $2700 or I can get a used one with 95K on it form a junkyard and have it put in for a total of $1500.

I really don't know whether to sink more money into the car or just get a new one. I HATE car problems.

After 11 years and 197,000 miles, Id probably cut my losses, but thats just me.
You could probably get a decent temporary car for 2700...

I drive a 1984 Mercedes-Benz 300SD with 217K miles on it. I bought it last year with 193K. Got it because I wanted to try making biodiesel (did it all last summer, waiting for it to warm up so I can start again). It cost about $2K to buy, and it's like a tank; an ugly, ugly tank.

That said, I'd recommend it as a durable car.
