    Pedro to return June 3rd

NEW YORK -- Pedro Martinez is scheduled to return to pitching -- for the Mets -- on Tuesday, June 3, against the Giants in San Francisco. He is to pitch in a Class A game in Port St. Lucie, Fla., on Wednesday and, after five days off, make his second big league start of the season. The club had visions of him returning to the team this week, but Martinez returned to the Dominican Republic last week to be with his seriously ill father, and his schedule was changed.
Martinez started the Mets' second game of the season against the Marlins and strained his left hamstring in the fourth inning. The start against the Giants will be just his seventh since Sept. 26, 2006. He has pitched 32 innings since then and 62 2/3 since June 28 that year.

Good news. Maybe his presence can shake things up a bit.

He will pitch 5 1/3 innings and start to talk about an extension.

If he can come back healthy and pitch anything like he did in 2005, or even what he did at the end of last season, it would be a big lift to the team. Santana, Pedro, Maine, Perez, Vargas? (Pelfrey has not been competitive as of late) I think that would be a very solid rotation and maybe just the thing to get the team going on a nice win streak.

For as bleak as these past few weeks have been the Mets are still very much in the mix and a sudden hot streak could put them in second or even first within a week or two. Time to play respectable baseball.

    Not bad.

That might have been the A-ball game of the Year on paper though. Pedro vs David Price. What a matchup.
