Yankees roster changes (call up Paterson and Giese)

Mark Feinsand of the NY Daily News:

    Quote:

Source: Yanks to call up Patterson today

Following last night’s extra-inning affair in which they drained their bullpen, the Yankees will call up righthander Scott Patterson for today’s game against the Twins, according to a source familiar with the team’s plans.

Patterson had a near-perfect spring, retiring 22 of the 23 batters he faced in exhibition games. Patterson almost made the team out of camp, but he was beaten out by Jonathan Albaladejo for the final spot.

In 22 games for Scranton, Patterson is 1-0 with three saves and a 3.04 ERA.

To make room for Patterson, the Yankees could option Shelley Duncan to Triple-A, or they could designate Morgan Ensberg for assignment, since it is unlikely that they would send a pitcher down with a short bullpen. Neither Duncan nor Ensberg are in the lineup today, as Wilson Betemit gets the start at first base.

According to the source, righthander Dan Giese will be called up from Triple-A for Tuesday’s game. Joe Girardi said yesterday that the Yankees would bring up a long reliever to back up Joba Chamberlain, whose pitch count will be in the 65-70 range for his first big-league start.

Jeff Karstens had been considered the front-runner because he is already on the 40-man roster, but he left Saturday’s game with a groin injury, taking him out of consideration. Giese, 30, is 4-2 with a 2.02 ERA in 12 games, including nine starts.

To make room for Giese on the 40-man roster, the Yankees could move Phil Hughes from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL, though they will also have to make a spot for him on the active roster, as Patterson or Chris Britton will likely be sent back to Triple-A.
I'd send down Duncan, DFA Eneberg, and call up Lane and Paterson

Update, 11:15 a.m.: Ensberg was designated for assignment to make room for Patterson.
Good move. Seems like a nice guy, but he became useless.

I'd cut Duncan, total waste of a roster spot.

He still has options, what's the point of cutting him?

He's completely useless. The only thing keeping him up here are his options and his last name. Horrible defensive player and has zero plate discipline. I was excited for his call up last year, but man he's not great MLB talent.

What has he done for me lately?

I pretty much agree, but still, releasing him is stupid.
