    Myy top 10 Rock/ Pop songs of all time (60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's)

I'll start off with the 60's arguably the best decade for Rock, after the 60's early 70's pretty much everything had been done already. It's a bit gut wrenching leaving some bands out but here goes:

    10) Jefferson Airplane- Somebody to love:http://youtube.com/watch?v=JUbMWtUyI...eature=related How much acid can a body take?
    9) The Byrds- Mr. Tambourine man=http://youtube.com/watch?v=VVnU_WaTvdc&feature=related
    8) The Beach Boys- I get around: I put this up with any early Beatles song, Beach Boys were brilliant.
    7) Mamas and the Papas- California dreaming:http://youtube.com/watch?v=-wI6uAOHzvo Poor Cass! Phillips was smokin'!
    6) Zombies- Time of the season- http://youtube.com/watch?v=s5Rqk2rG9s4 Emblematic of the time, this is before it all went wrong.
    5) Jimmy Hendrix- Purple Haze:http://youtube.com/watch?v=n_i5Ca1FYko A guitar God.
    4) The Rolling Stones- Paint it black:http://youtube.com/watch?v=8MO0iGw-0sY Hippest Stone song ever.
    3) The Beatles- She loves you-http://youtube.com/watch?v=aynOt347nME&feature=related: This song wet more panties than all of Elvis' songs put together.
    2) The Doors- Light my fire:http://youtube.com/watch?v=CQmSSVtbqkQ... What could've been!
    1) The Beatles- Hey Jude:http://youtube.com/watch?v=hxNKyB8f_p0... This is my earliest music recollection... My dad used to play this over and over for me.

There you have it, I left out some great bands like Cream, Led Zep, Dylan, The Kinks... but it's a top 10 no way you can squeeze all the that greatness in there, Beatles get 2 entries though, they have to in my book. Next the 70's

Sorry I left out the Mamas and the Papas with California Dreaming, The Beach Boys with I get around and at #2 The Doors with Light my fire.

70's had twice as many bands but not as brilliant than the 60's over all but a lot of great tunes:

    10) Kansas- Dust in the wind-http://youtube.com/watch?v=hkbdP7sq0w8 Ugliest dudes in the history of Rock, but what a sweet tune.

    9) Roxy Music- Virginia plain:http://youtube.com/watch?v=_zoi6O-cq9I These cats were so ahead of their time, the chicks didn't even know how to dance to it.

    8) Blondie- Heart of glass: Playboy bimbo looks but so much more, Disco meets rock and the 80's begin.

    7) Boston- More than a feeling:http://youtube.com/watch?v=IcsVPis1iNs I used to play this over and over when I was a kid.

    6) Don McClain- American pie:http://youtube.com/watch?v=mZ8miTErh...eature=related... **** this song is so sweet I wanted to be there to understand it too.

    5) Pink Floyd- Shine on you crazy diamond: http://youtube.com/watch?v=vyqgjCKm9nQ One of the best songs ever written in my opinion.

    4) David Bowie- Ziggy Stardust: http://youtube.com/watch?v=6dQWzdUVMbI
How many has he influenced? No telling.

    3) The Eagles- Hotel California: http://youtube.com/watch?v=hcwr1nbmWLI Of course I had to put it in the top 3.

    2) George Harrison- My sweet lord: Too bad it wasn't about Christ, still the most spiritual song ever... My favorite Beatle too, McCartney a close second.

    1) Led Zeppelin- Stairway to heaven: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ayzhJKy8H_A Did the devil write this? Maybe the best rock song ever.

OK the 80's... Very disappointing too much crap. Worst decade ever for rock and music in general. But like anything there were some goodies too. I will do a top 20 since I actually lived it:

    20) REM- Orange crush: I know this not their best song but make your own list:http://youtube.com/watch?v=mbNnKDyUFmE

    19) The Clash- London Calling:http://youtube.com/watch?v=IXfaxEaPOjw
I drove my mom crazy in the summer of 82 with The Clash, she hated them!

    18) U2- Gloria:http://youtube.com/watch?v=2GyTdo1nGO0
I loved them then, but just like Duran Duran, The Police they turned into such s****, I went and got this the day after I saw the video on MTV, this was their first video btw.

    17) Morrissey- Every day is like sunday:http://youtube.com/watch?v=eC18xFFEp-M
I was devastated when I heard that The Smiths had broken up, Morrissey has done just fine thank you. Not as big a fan as I was gotta admit, he wears on me now, but I still got love for the Moz.

    16) The Cult- Fire woman:http://youtube.com/watch?v=E0coJxNgASs
If the big hair lipstick bands of the 80's had tried to sound more like this then the 80's wouldn't have been such a tragedy. The Cult rocks!

    15) Duran Duran- Late bar:http://youtube.com/watch?v=ETPhDCtIkw0
No Rio or Girls on Film or Hungry like the wolf, early Duran was solid too bad they decided to go image over substance. John Taylor from that era rocks, awesome bassist.

    14) Roxy music- More than this:http://youtube.com/watch?v=OfgU4iQr8PU
Brian Ferry sounds like a God in this song.

    13) Rush- Tom Sawyer:http://youtube.com/watch?v=U7DFsBcVMDA Rush is one of the best pure rock bands of all time, nevermind the 80's, Neil Pert is insane!

    12) Depeche Mode- Enjoy the silence: http://youtube.com/watch?v=cGxOUezyCms
Sounds so crappy now... hehehe, but DP was such a guilty pleasure. So many tried to copy them at that time but they had that sound downpat.

    11) Echo and the Bunnymen- Rescue:http://youtube.com/watch?v=pyrHq3Buu...eature=related
I saw them in London live, awesome concert!

    10) David Bowie- Ashes to ashes:http://youtube.com/watch?v=r44OFO-MNPo
My favorite Bowie tune of the 80's... When you have Bowie's type you can afford to be a junkie.

    9) The Smiths- There is a light that never goes out:http://youtube.com/watch?v=INgXzChwipY
Morrisey was like a modern day Oscar Wilde and everyone could relate to his lyrics from a 90 year old woman or a bum in the street.

    8) Joy Divison- Love will tear us apart:http://youtube.com/watch?v=K0dfd_L4tDk
They were so ahead of their time, later on New Order carried their torch. First time I saw them was on IRS the Cutting Edge a show that used to air late Saturdays on MTV, awesome band.

    7) The Pixies- Break my body:http://youtube.com/watch?v=9X1IE3yrLmk Black Francis and Kim Deal saved American rock, Kurt Cobain wanted to sound like this not the other way around. I should mention Sonic Youth, but they missed my top 20.

    6) The Jesus and Mary chain- Taste the floor:http://youtube.com/watch?v=iTEKFd3MnAA
One of the loudest songs ever, you hear this in a club and you will taste your eardrum nevermind the floor. Violent guitar thrash...Yeha!

    5) The Cure- Just like heaven: http://youtube.com/watch?v=ORc5Td_T6og
My second favorite band of the 80's, their body of work in the 80's is impressive, they should be my number one. I hear their last album was good, but I cut them like 10 years ago for sucking so hard, their 80's material I'd put up with anybody.

    4) New Order- Ceremony:http://youtube.com/watch?v=MhNDKZmxRLM This sounds like it could be today and it was 81... Amazing!

    3) The Cure- A forest: http://youtube.com/watch?v=HY7wuV_C1oI
A cure concert not ending with A forest is not worth going to. The girl was never there it's always the same... Slik stole her again and again and again...

    2) The Smiths- This charming man:http://youtube.com/watch?v=sHv9_5T3zTE
Johnny Marr is the best guitar of the 80's bar none and he didn't need any 30 minute long whiny solos either.

    1) The Smiths- How soon is now: http://youtube.com/watch?v=K2NrIALcNOw
The gap between The Smiths and everybody else was pretty wide. In a way I'm glad they quit when they did, they didn't overstay their welcome like so many other bands in the 80's have.

I was thinking this thread should be renamed to "I'm talking to myself".

I think Pennington might start instead of Clemens. What do you think?

Everyone is putting up music threads after I started my top ten, but my thread gets dumped, in the meantime Sar's Coldplay thread still rages on. I guess the only way you get carte blanche around here is to join the ACM.
