The "bomb" that hit Pearl Harbor

    Barak Obama (yesterday):

But it is wonderful to be back in Indiana. In a few moments, we’ll open up the discussion. But I want to offer a few comments about some of the emerging threats that we face in the 21st century and offer some ideas about how we can face those threats.

Throughout our history, America’s confronted constantly evolving danger, from the oppression of an empire, to the lawlessness of the frontier, from the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor, to the threat of nuclear annihilation. Americans have adapted to the threats posed by an ever-changing world.

Notably missing in his list of threats is the threat of terrorism by Islamic Jihad.

Where did I say I was outraged?

They just need a better fact-checker to look over his cue cards.

Obviously, a bomb did fall on Pearl Harbor. Many of them did, in fact.

Did you really start a thread because he didn't use the plural tense?

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.

Actually, Bush did screw up one time and said Sept. 7th was the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. The press did have a field day.

Maybe he was referring to torpedos the Japanese dropped in the water to take out the Pacific Fleet. But when someone says "the bomb", they usually mean a nuke.

Many, many bombs fell from many, many planes that day.

I find it far more likely that he accidentally dropped the plural than that he was referring to a nuclear attack on the U.S. that never took place.

These guys are recorded 24/7 in the YouTube era and, given the grueling nature of the campaign, they're going to misspeak from time to time, often in amusing ways (such as McCain's three recent refrences to a country that hasn't existed since the early 90s and Obama's "57 states" goof).

There will occasionally be a goof that casts real doubt on a candidate, or gives us a great big belly laugh at his expense, but dropping the plural from "bombs" doesn't strike me as something that gets above either bar.
