Why Obama snubbed the troops in Germany: no photo op allowed
Why Obama snubbed the troops: no photo op allowed

Send to a Friend | printer-friendly NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube get the skinny on the abrupt cancellation of Barack Obama’s visit to Landstuhl and Ramstein yesterday. The campaign tried to excuse it by claiming that it wouldn’t be appropriate to visit while on a campaign-funded portion of his trip, but that wasn’t the real problem. When Obama found out he couldn’t use the visit as a photo op, he canceled:

A U.S. military official tells NBC News they were making preparations for Sen. Barack Obama to visit wounded troops at the Landstuhl Medical Center at Ramstein, Germany on Friday, but "for some reason the visit was called off."

One military official who was working on the Obama visit said because political candidates are prohibited from using military installations as campaign backdrops, Obama's representatives were told, "he could only bring two or three of his Senate staff member, no campaign officials or workers." In addition,

"Obama could not bring any media. Only military photographers would be permitted to record Obama's visit."

The official said "We didn't know why" the request to visit the wounded troops was withdrawn. "He (Obama) was more than welcome. We were all ready for him."

In fact, those same rules applied for the CODEL trip to Iraq and Afghanistan. They serve to keep politicians from exploiting military facilities for political reasons, and to ensure that all visitors get treated fairly. Andrea Mitchell, also of NBC, complained of this very issue during the earlier visits with the troops when she told Chris Matthews that the media couldn’t get access to Obama when visiting troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

This makes the decision track very clear. Obama and his team set up the visits to military installations before going overseas. After seeing how the media got excluded in Iraq and Afghanistan, they decided it wasn’t worth traveling to Ramstein and Landstuhl to visit the severely wounded troops because they couldn’t bring the campaign and get the photo ops they wanted. Instead, Obama went shopping in Berlin.

As I wrote yesterday, that’s certainly a revealing set of priorities for a man who wants to lead these troops as Commander in Chief.
what's more important, visiting wounded troops or making sure troops don't get wounded in the first place?

Please ignore the Washington Post and Chicago Sun-Times articles that make clear the Pentagon changed ITS mind about the Ramstein visit. But let's take a look at how Dumb and Dumber would play this, NO MATTER WHAT OBAMA DID:

    1. He visits the troops (D&D: Look at that pandering, flip-flopping Hussein exploiting wounded soldiers for his cynical campaign agenda!!!!)

    2. He doesn't visit the troops (D&D: Hussein SNUBS wounded soldiers, disrespecting the entire military and showing how completely unpatriotic and subversive this Muslim extremist can be!!!!)

And so it goes, the gerbil wheel of D&D, who have no better use of their time but to have hissy-fits over nonsense and waste our time.

Who said that? If you focused on real issues rather than this juvenile BS, you might stir a serious debate. Instead we get this utterly assinine, really stupid crap. It's actually an embarrassment that the reactionary robots like you can't do any better. The next thing you'll come up with is comparing Michelle's hairdo to Cindy's.... oh wait, you already did that....

I've never compared Miss Militant's hairdo to Cindy's. There is nothing wrong with Miss Militant's hairdo.

The face however would make a freight train take a dirt road.

I'm not even sure what that means, but it's hilarious. I am definitely using that in the future.

funny thing about hussien....he called the troops in germany this morning....
Obama Cancels Trip to Visit Wounded U.S. Soldiers (Update4)

By Patrick Donahue and Julianna Goldman

July 25 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama canceled a visit to wounded American soldiers at a U.S. military base in southwest Germany after the Pentagon raised issues about whether the trip was campaign-related.

Scott Gration, a foreign-policy adviser to Obama, said that the U.S. Defense Department told the campaign late yesterday that the visit to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center would be viewed as ``a campaign event.'' The military said that, while it endorsed a visit, it determined that Obama wasn't allowed to be accompanied to the medical center by campaign staff.

``Senator Obama did not want to have a trip to see our wounded warriors perceived as a campaign event when his visit was to show his appreciation for our troops and decided instead not to go,'' Gration said in the statement.

so why didn't hussien just go see the troops without any cameras and campaign staff???? seems rather simple...

Obama, who drew a crowd of about 200,000 people yesterday to hear a speech in central Berlin, intended to visit Landstuhl in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate this morning before traveling on to Paris. Instead, he telephoned wounded soldiers at the base, a Pentagon spokeswoman said.

``The senator decided out of respect for these servicemen and women that it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign,'' senior strategist Robert Gibbs said in a statement.

Pentagon spokeswoman Elizabeth Hibner said the base was ``prepared to host him, but his campaign canceled the visit.''

    `Election Capacity'

Obama ``was told he could visit as an official but he cannot come in an election capacity, not visit with his campaign staff,'' Hibner said in a telephone interview.

The Pentagon considered two Obama aides, Gration and Jeff Kiernan, to be members of his campaign team and therefore not permitted to accompany the senator to Landstuhl, according to a Pentagon letter sent by European Command spokesman John Dorrian. Obama could only be accompanied by one of his Senate staff and ``the appropriate number of security personnel.''

Republican presidential contender John McCain's campaign criticized Obama's decision to cancel the visit.

``It is always appropriate to visit and comfort our brave troops who have served in combat,'' Tucker Bounds, a campaign spokesman, said in a statement.

Gordon Johndroe, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, declined to comment.

Obama, who is on the penultimate day of a weeklong tour of the Middle East and Europe, visited U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq earlier this week as part of a congressional delegation.

The Illinois senator left Berlin's Tegel airport on his campaign jet after lunch. He is scheduled to meet with French President Nicolas Sarkozy later today before heading on to London, where he will meet with Prime Minister Gordon Brown and his predecessor, Tony Blair.
Well, at least the question of why no journalists were allowed to ask questions or take photos at the military bases was answered.
The pentagon doesn't allow campaigning on it's bases. Also, congressional delegations to Iraq are kept secret because of security reasons.

    Hmmmm

Funny....I knew when they were there, and I didn't see any other photos of any other congressional delegate that was there.

Wait, was that Chuck Hagel wiping that basketball off for Obama?
Ya,ya and I think I saw Jack Reed in the bleachers cheering Obama on.

Oh well, thank God they don't allow campaigning on military bases.

The reasons that the Obama team are coming up with for him not visiting wounded US soldiers is as phony as Obama himself.

Wow, you have convinced me that Obama is so much worse than those neocon chickenhawks who invaded Iraq based on lies and false pretenses, completely mismanaged the aftermath of the invasion and caused all those soldiers sitting Landstuhl to have the injuries they have today.

I guess it's also those "neocon chickenhawks'" fault for the following....
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Spc. Grover Gebhart has spent nine months at a small post on a Sunni-Shiite fault line in western Baghdad. But the 21-year-old soldier on his first tour in Iraq feels he's missing the real war -- in Afghanistan, where his brother is fighting the Taliban.
Military officials say violence in Iraq is at its lowest point in the past four years.

With violence in Iraq at its lowest level in four years and the war in Afghanistan at a peak, the soldiers serving at patrol station Maverick say Gebhart's view is increasingly common, especially among younger soldiers looking to prove themselves in battle.
The ironic thing is that IF Obama can pull off all he claims he'll do, he fits the biblical description of the anti-Christ rather than the Messiah!

If Obama campaigns in the woods and there is no media to cover it, is it really campaigning?
