    Champions League 08-09

It's that time of the year again...

Although tonight the first legs for the second qualifying matches will be played (Let's Go MTK ) the real fun will begin on friday when the draws will be made for the third qualifying round.

Our last few years haven't been very good so we're not seeded for the draw. If we draw one of the big names it's not going to be easy getting in but keep in mind we've never lost a match in champions league qualifying let alone get knocked out.

Some of the teams that will come from the second qualifying round will be seeded (like Anderlecht or god forbid the sewerbirds) so I'm not sure exactly which ones are seeded but here are the teams that will be in the draw friday.

    Barcelona (SPN)
    Atletico Madrid (SPN)
    Arsenal (ENG)
    Liverpool (ENG)
    Juventus (ITA)
    Fiorentina (ITA)
    Olympique Marseille (FRA)
    FC Schalke (GER)
    Vitoria (POR)
    Steaua Bucharest (ROM)
    FC Twente (HOL)
    Spartak Moscow (RUS)
    Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR)
    Standard Liege (BEL)
    Slavia Prague (CZH)
    Galatasaray (TUR)

    Olympiakos (GRE)
    Levski Sofia (BUL)
Rangers FC (SCO) or FBK Kaunas (LTU)
SK Brann (NOR) or FK Ventspils (LVA)
FK Inter Baki (AZE) or FK Partizan (SRB)
Tampere United (FIN) or FC Artmedia Petrzalka (SVK)
Anorthosis Famugusta (CYP) or SK Rapid Wien (AUT)
NK Domzale (SVN) or NK Dinamo Zagreb (CRO)
Panathinaikos FC (GRE) or FC Dinamo Tbilisi (GEO)
IFK Gothenburg (SWE) or FC Basel (SUI)
FC Sheriff (MDA) or Sparta Prague (CZE)
Drogheda United FC (IRL) or FC Dynamo Kiev (UKR)
Anderlecht (BEL) or FC BATE Borisov (BLR)
Beitar Jerusalem FC (ISR) or Wisla Krakow (POL)
Sewerbird SK (TUR) or MTK Budapest (HUN)

Aalborg BK (DEN) or FK Modrica (BIH)

Usually we're the only Turkish team who gets any points in european competitions (except for last year when the sewerbirds got in on the act a little) and since we have been sucking bad in europe for the past 3-4 years our coefficents has hit a lowpoint.

But it does tick me off when some countries second or third place team gets into the CL ahead of anothers champion. that is bs.

I hate the CL format. Take me back to 3 European Cups, with only Championship winners in C1.

I'd be pi$$ed if I were you. OK, they want to make money with group stages, fine. The common denominator should be 1st place finishers automatically qualify, no matter how low the coefficient.

    It's discrimination pure and simple.

I agree with you 100% especially about the three cup format. CL is fun but that doesn't mean the others aren't.

If it was up to me I'd immedeatly scrap the UEFA cup's group play and reinstate the Cup Winners Cup, CWC was great there were some long shot lower division teams, some big powerhouses who finished second (all you younglings out there believe it or not, only Champions used to play in the Champions Cup )

And scrap the BS of having eliminated CL rejects continue from the Uefa Cup.

f**k industrialized football, at least in Turkey they can't make us sit to watch the games, yet(!)

I guess it's a sure sign you're not yet part of Europe .

Joke aside, I'm surprised Platini hasn't shooken things up more. During his candidacy, he was very vocal about expanding the Euro boundaries, and squashing the money mongers.

I did a thread about this, and most people prefered the 3 Cup format with home/away knock out matches.

    Last night's scores:

    Galatasaray 2-2 Steaua Bükreş
    Partizan 2-2 Fenerbahçe
    Fiorentina 2-0 Slavia Prague
    Spartak Moskova 1-4 Dinamo Kiev
    Levski Sofia 0-1 BATE Borisov
    Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 Dinamo Zagreb
    Anorthosis 3-0 Olympiakos
    Aalborg 2-0 FBK Kaunas
    Brann 0-1 Marsilya
    Juventus 4-0 Petrzalka
    Schalke 1-0 Atletico Madrid
    Sparta Prague 1-2 Panathinaikos
    Twente 0-2 Arsenal

I was at our match last night and we got killed by our idiot goalie. He let 2 in in the first ten minutes then we had to try to come back, we got the 2 back but I'm not sure if it's going to be enough. It'll be a hard match in Romania.

And RD, the ref, your fellow frenchmen Laurent Duhamel f..ed us royally last night.

    Not this season...

Yesterday it was the Italian ref's turn to rape us:

after he allowed this offside goal to stand, Steau stayed back near it's penalty with 9 players and it was like beating the ball against a wall.

It hurts more than you can imagine. Well maybe not more than you can imagine considering LOM is in.

Yeah we're going to be hell bent on doing well this year. Right now there is no real fan reaction only because of the fact that the UEFA cup final is there but if we get eliminated from the UEFA cup prematurely Michael Skibbe won't see another morning in Istanbul.

Damn. I wanted Michael Laudrup as the TD before the season. We have a truly great team of players but every match we've played this season is convincing me more and more that we've signed the German version of Herm Edwards, minus the motivational tools. The team is just too soft, they didn't train hard at all, they are making all kinds of useless back passes and they are playing so slow that it takes as a month and a half to get to the other teams penalty area.

I haven't seen a team this predictable since the days of "3&10 Curtis Draw up the middles".

You think KC would give us something for this guy?

    It's almost like we're writing a blog

Sometimes I peek out at the other forums and say "hey who the hell are all these people and what are they doing in my forum"

Keep talking, I'm reading it. I'm taking some time off from futbol discussion until the Euro leagues start up in a couple weeks.
