The Mets were still focused on altering their bullpen, which means acquiring new relievers and possibly shipping out current relievers such as Scott Schoeneweis and/or Aaron Heilman. But they turned down the Cleveland Indians' offer of Rafael Betancourt for Joe Smith and others. Apparently, the Mets are down on Betancourt, who was a huge star for Cleveland last year but is currently having a bad year, about to get more expensive and has pitched a lot the past few seasons. ... The Mets believe that there will be enough corner-outfield bats clearing waivers in August that they can wait and see what's going on with Ryan Church before deciding whether they really need one. ... They continued to look around for a mid-range starting pitcher such as Paul Byrd or Livan Hernandez in case John Maine's injury turns out to be serious and Pedro Martinez remains a major question mark. But they also promoted Jon Niese, their top pitching prospect, to Triple-A New Orleans recently with an eye toward seeing if he might be a 2008 solution for them.
