What did Obama say about the surge in Iraq again?

McCain: For it, when no one else was.

    Obama: Vociferously against it.

That's about the only thing I know of that Obama's even had a chance to be right or wrong about.

You got a better chance with photoshop, kid. The facts will bite you.

So it is your opinion that we can leave Iraq within 12 months and they will be a thriving Democracy?

That Iraq will have elections again within 6 months?

And when we do leave the Sunnis we armed and trained in Anbar province will not make a violent play for power?

The Iraq war was based upon a lie (which should in fact be a war crime), was brutally mismanaged throughout (thank you Donnie Rumsfeld!) and the surge, although successful, just dug us out of a hole we never should have been in in the first place.

You can put lipstick on a pig....

The obsession if the surge 'worked' is just absurd... especially if the definition of 'worked' has been redefined over and over again in the last two years.

Putting a substantial number of troops in Iraq of course was going to reduce the violence. BUT THAT WAS NOT THE ENTIRE PURPOSE OF THE SURGE.

The idea behind adding troops was to stabilize the country, and allow Iraq to step up and take over their own country. There were 18 benchmarks set that were expected to be reached.

3 of 18 have been met.

And yet - because violence is down, we're 'winning'.. the surge is a 'success'?

Iraq still cannot run itself, while we pump billions of dollars over there. It's still unknown what will happen when we withdraw troops, since it's their presence that holds the country together.. and yet the surge has worked?

Woah. Not so fast there Lee Harvey.

15 of 18 benchmarks have been met.

That means 3 of 18 have not.

link, please.. i spent the last 5 minutes looking for an updated surge benchmark report- as of january 3 of 18 had been met. I've seen some right wing blogs proclaiming 15, while recent left wing blogs still put the # at 3, with progress in 6 other areas.

the benchmarks were supposed to have been met by 11/07. Iraq is still not in any position to govern itself, and that's the problem.

The report was prepared by the US Embassy in Baghdad. Washington Post obtained a copy. I haven't been able to find one myself.

Love it or hate it, you can't undo it. When faced with a choice Obama's big misread also included loss and dishonor for America. McCain sided with the surge big time when few else would for political reasons. He had foresight Obama lacked. And he'd rather lose an election than a war, just the opposite of Obama.
