Quote from Obama's statement:

"This is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who in 40 days will become responsible for this mess. It will be part of the president's job to deal with more than one thing at once."

let's be real for a minute- neither Obama or McCain have a leading role in drafting this legislation.. going back to Washington accomplishes little, and if anything, is politicial ploy on McCain's part.

 stunt. No one has missed more votes than McCain. A few days off may be good, an old guy like that needs rest before the debate.
These guys are both on the back burner right now with the financial crisis taking headlines away. It's amazing that less than 2 months before an election these guys are finding themselves essentially "below the fold" on a daily basis. Strange times indeed.

I think neither one of them want to get pushed in a debate to talk about this crisis during such a sensitive time in the crafting of this plan. It would be counterproductive to the process of resolving the problem right now and only politicize it more. Congress is debating this enough, we don't need one of these guys saying something during the debate that then puts either the Dems or Republicans in a situation where they need to support or go against what "their guy" said and it ends up affecting the best possible outcome.

I think it's in the best interest of the country for Congress and the administration to finalize something and pass it before we throw both of these guys into a debate where they may only be forced to politicize it further.

Smart move in my opinion....not for McCain, not for Obama...for our country.
isn't friday's debate on national security?

    Good for Obama.

McCain is trying to call timeout to stop Obama's momentum. Both of these guys can add their two cents and vote on it and still debate.

If anything, the two of them taking a more active role at the last minute would threaten to politicize something that has been handled, to date, in a surprisingly nonpartisan fashion.

    GREAT point.

Okay, now it's McCain's turn to tell everyone Obama is putting his campaign over the country.

He'd say that no matter what Obama did, and he has been saying all along no matter what Obama does.

The fact is, throwing negotiations that have been handled in a surprisingly nonpartisan fashion to date into the glare of a presidential campaign so you can stop your opponent's momentum is not putting country first.

As with the Palin pick, its a cynical campaign ploy that is risky for the country.

So what now, Obama shows up at the debate and McCain doesn't, or does McCain show up with his tail between his legs?

Riiiiight....except that the debate has nothing to do with the economy.

Other than that, hammer squarely on nail.

Edit: Damn...Piper beat me to it.

what's the difference??? you already set impossibly low expectations for hussien on friday and weren't expecting much...in essence conceded defeat before it began....this will give hussien more time to prepare....
Obama won't cancel.

He can't remember where the Capitol is.

He has only been there a few times.
Harry Reid:

"It would not be helpful at this time to have them come back during these negotiations and risk injecting presidential politics into this process or distract important talks about the future of our nation's economy. If that changes, we will call upon them. We need leadership; not a campaign photo op.

"If there were ever a time for both candidates to hold a debate before the American people about this serious challenge, it is"
