Don't get me wrong, 99% of the time, it's fine. Turk can chime in when he logs on. I'm sure in Turkey things can get hairy but it doesn't stop him from going. I also kind of grew out of it to be honest.

One things for sure, I wouldn't take my kid to a game. I never say anything, but when I read about people complaining about Gate D, or cursing in the stands...be grateful. Things could be worse.

If you do go to Italy, you HAVE to experience it. Go with someone who knows the story, and won't put you in the visitors section or whatever. You'll love the tifos and a whole stadium chanting behind your team is awesome, and has nothing to do with american sports.

haha, I was going to say... it makes Gate D look like a preschool classroom.

There's no denying though the difference between an American crowd and a European crowd, passion-wise.

If I get around to it, I'll post pics from different stadiums.

A close friend is Spanish and crazy Real fanatic. We went to a game at Bernabeu in Madrid, and the year after that we went to Camp Nou in Barcelona. We said we'd do a different stadium, every year...guess we'll have to put that on hold for a while

The last time I went a Jets game I was 12, so I can't remember.

From what i read, you can have sporadic individual fights at a football game. What you don't have is the mob mentality where 50 guys will charge the cops, or opposing fans, or throwing stuff from one section to another..

Here's a vid from 93 when things were really out of hand.

The dudes getting the sh*t kicked out of them are cops. (2:50 mark for better quality)

Right, that's about accurate. A few fights here or there, but nothing close to that kind of mob rule.

I haven't been going to away games the past two years so I guess I've grown somewhat out of it as well.

I guess we're one of the worst in terms of fan violance but I don't know I guess you kind of get used to it. In Turkey the real challenge is going to away games. When it's your stadium you're pretty safe but of course you do get searched and frisked a lot by cops and pickpockets like any crowd but that's about it.

They have an away section in Turkey which comprises of 5% of the home stadium, for example in this picture:

taken at Besiktas's stadium we were the away fans in red the behind the far goal. So as you can imagine its not always a walk in the park to get to the stadium as an away fan. Therefore its usually only the real hardcore supporters or lunatics , that go. But if you are a real Galatasaray fan there is nothing better than to listen to the sound of silence of 50.000 people when you score an away goal, and vice cersa of course. Every fan should experience it at least once. It's dangerous but its worth it.

As far as tailgating Istanbul is exactly like Paris. Our stadums are in the middle of the city so there is no parking lot of any kind to speak of. But usually the streets beside the stadium become like carnivals, esspecially before big matches.

Here are a few great fan/stadium photos from across europe:

Like Turk said, going to an away game takes cojones. You arrive in a bus, or train , parked in a specific part of the stadium which is sometimes caged, and escorted to and from the stadium. Or sometimes not esorted at all, and it's Warriors of the Night all over again

    It's nuts.

We should do that to Patriots fans.

    That's Luigi Ferraris in Genoa.

I like those kind of stadiums as well but I think the photos been played with, I mean the stands look almost like a wall.

The worst are the olympic style stadiums, where you're like a million miles from the pitch.

Yeah, when I first saw the pic I thought the stands looked like cliffs. English style stadiums are the best.

The Stade de France where the national teams plays sucks donkey balls. It's beautiful and all that, but it's really stretched out. No atmosphere whatsoever. Plus Parisians fans are douchebags who boo if the score isn't 3-0 by halftime.

Last night we got beat by the last place Kocaelispor 5-2 at home. It was the first time in some 20 odd years we were scored 5 against in our home stadium in the league.

Of course that coupled with the fact that we gained only 5 points from the 4 matches to open the second half of the league Michael Skibbe was sacked today.

In his place there were two Galatasaray legends rumored to be appointed, one was Hagi and the other Bülent Korkmaz. It's said in the press that Hagi turned down being an interim coach and wanted a long term deal. So Bülent has been appointed.

He played centre back for us for close to 20 years, from 1989 to 2007. He's almost Maldiniesque in his place in Galatasaray lore. His continuing to play in the 2000 UEFA cup final despite dislocating his shoulder because we had no more substitiutions is legendary. He first made his name by putting the clamps on Fofana of Monaco when he was 19, now his first game in charge will be against Bordeaux. Hope it begins the same way...

I read about the 5-2 and the firing of the head coach.

Not the best timing before the return match against Bordeaux. The stadium will be on fire though, right?

Definitely, even more so than had we beaten Kocaeli and Skibbe hadn't got fired.

Just the sight of Bulent in our colors again will ignite the stadium, he is easily in the top 3 of all time favorites of the fans.
