Conservatives

It is time for us to take back the Republican Party. We must start at the local level and get some new blood into the system. It is time to get rid of the Rhinos. We have 2 years to the next elections and 2 more after that to take back the country. So let us start right now! We must succeed. :feedback:

If I was the leadership in the Republican party

I would let Sarah Palin rot in Alaska and build your party around... Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal.

Well if you start at the local level is 2 years going to be enough time?

Shift the power of the Republican party from the religious social conservatives back to the fiscal conservatives. That would be the party's best and most effective course of action.

    that's easy to say

but Palin basically made this race competitive

the evangelicals didn't really buy McCain

they weren't excited, they weren't volunteering

if Mccain grabs Lieberman or Ridge we are talking about sustained double digit poll gaps

the GOP has a very real problem, there is a huge scism between the fiscal conservatives and the social conservatives, and I don't see any obvious way (short of the rapture) that this rift gets healed.

    I disagree Bit.

The right would have come around for McCain regardless of his VP nominee. It's very easy for them to rally against a Muslim socialist terrorist.

The Palin pick lost McCain a ton of support from Independent and moderate voters. After the luster wore off and she was exposed for who she is, the campaign was doomed to fail.

I wanted to pull some quotes out of this, but I realized the whole damn speech is quotable.

Barry Goldwater's address at the 1964 RNC. REQUIRED READING:

Didn't Goldwater get trounced by LBJ? What exactly is the history behind Goldwater? Why is he like the crown jewel for conservatives. Serious question.

He's the father of the modern Conservative movement. Yes, he got trounced by LBJ, but that's far from the whole story. The guy is an absolute icon, officially laying the groundwork for three decades of mainstream conservative politics, culminating with Reagan's election. And just so you're not confused, it has nothing to do with Bush's brand of "conservatism".

I could go into the whole story but I'm leaving in about 10 mins and still have some things to finish up.

When did conservatives not have control of the republican party? 1861?

He's America's Edmund Burke. Conscience of a Conservative is probably one of the top 5 American political writings ever published and certainly the most influential of the past 30+ years.

The strength of the Republican party is the evangelicals, without them you have nothing. With them, you need something abnormal (like war, terrorism or crime) to get the fiscal conservatives / social liberals to stay home and therein lies the problem. You cannot be rid of the religious conservatives and have any chance at all -- frankly they may be able to do well without you guys. Also, I think your 2012 nominee is Huckabee.
