Latest on the Mark Teixeira Negotiations

    http://masnsports.com/2008/12/the-na...e-taken-t.html

The Nationals may have taken the lead

By Roch Kubatko on December 22, 2008 7:48 PM

According to multiple sources, the Washington Nationals have sweetened their proposal to first baseman Mark Teixeira, offering him an eight-year deal worth $178 to $184 million.

The Nats were believed to have an eight-year, $160 million offer on the table. They apparently have increased the total value, putting them ahead of the other contenders, based on the numbers that have been reported.

I'm also told that they're willing to go nine years - and there's been talk of 10 - which could be one reason why agent Scott Boras is dragging along negotiations. He's also trying to get the Red Sox back in the game and see if the Yankees and Orioles will react.

He's just playing the game... From all reports, Teixiera is on board with Boras' plan as much as any player ever has been, right up there with A-Rod. I'm not sure if that means he'd decide to go there ultimately, but he'll trust Boras to get as much money from whichever team he ends up signing with as he can.

My guess is that Teixiera would only end up in Washington if they gave him the opt out after 3 years and he was given a 9, or even 10, year contract that guaranteed him at least $200M. I'd still bet that he ends up in Boston though.

I'm not sure I would want both A-Rod and Teixiera on the Yankees. Bunch of women if you ask me.

Nats may have offered that money, but that hardly puts them in the lead. That's right around the range that Boston had on the table before their "We're not going to be a factor" statement, and apparently they never pulled their offer so they very much still seem to be in it.

Latest on Teixeira: Yanks stepping up Teixeira talks

Posted by: Jon Heyman 02:02 PM ET 12.23 SHARE

In the race to sign Mark Teixeira, the Yankees are turning up the heat.

The Yankees are in deep discussions with Teixeira, in what is now an attempt to beat out the rival Red Sox for Teixeira's services. The Teixeira sweepstakes is considered to be a three-team battle with the Nationals still involved. However, the Yankees' talks have turned serious in recent hours, as the team appears to be stepping up its attempts to lure the free-agent slugger to New York.
Hmm, Yankees serious or bumping up the price for the Sox?

Call me skeptical, but I think Heyman is just Boras's puppet to drive up the prices. He's the only one who seems to think they're seriously in this.

I still think it's gonna be Boston.

Report: Yankees may be in on Teixeira

Email|Link|Comments (32) Posted by Chad Finn, Globe Staff December 23, 2008 02:45 PM
Has Mark Teixeira's day of decision finally arrived? Reports are starting to trickle out that free-agent slugger will announce his destination today, and while one report suggests the Red Sox will win the sweepstakes, a more recent one indicates that none other than the New York Yankees have suddenly become aggressive in their pursuit of the 28-year-old first baseman.
The Washington Times website reported early this afternoon that a major league baseball source told reporter Thom Loverro that there will be announcement today regarding Teixeira's future. Here is the segment that should intrigue Red Sox fans:
While the source declined to discuss specifics, there are strong indications that the Red Sox will announce that they have landed the highly-coveted slugger, who has been courted this offseason by several major league clubs, including the Angels, Orioles and Nationals.
But at a little past 2 p.m., Sports Illustrated.com's Jon Heyman wrote the following on the site's Hot Stove News Tracker:
The Yankees are in deep discussions with Teixeira, in what is now an attempt to beat out the rival Red Sox for Teixeira's services. The Teixeira sweepstakes is considered to be a three-team battle with the Nationals still involved. However, the Yankees' talks have turned serious in recent hours, as the team appears to be stepping up its attempts to lure the free-agent slugger to New York.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Globe's Nick Cafardo reports that league sources told him that the Nationals and Red Sox appear to be the finalists, pending a last-minute offer from the Yankees (which, if Heyman's report is to be believed, may have already happened).
Cafardo says the Nationals are now offering nine years at $180 million, while the Red Sox have apparently not altered their offer of eight years at approximately $170 million. While the Red Sox' offer is at a higher annual value, the Nationals' offer of an extra year could be a factor.
This morning, an ESPN.com report bylined by Peter Gammons and Buster Olney suggests Teixeira's decision is "seemingly imminent," but does not offer a strong indication as to which team among the Red Sox, Nationals, Orioles, and Yankees that he will choose:
. . . The Baltimore Orioles' negotiations for the free-agent first baseman appear dormant. The Yankees, on the other hand, continue to review their options, preparing for the possibility -- however real it is -- that Teixeira might make them an offer that they couldn't refuse. The Boston Red Sox or the Washington Nationals continue to be the most likely destinations for Teixeira, executives involved in the process believe.
The Yankees made an initial offer to Teixeira, a proposal not close to the others, before they withdrew their bid, and they have maintained contact with the agent, Scott Boras.
Stay tuned throughout the day for more updates.
Nick Cafardo and Adam Kilgore of the Globe staff contributed to this report.

    Haha.

This is good for two reasons:

    1) No Manny
    2) No Manny

Plus Tex should be pretty good for the Yanks

    And Boston? F U
