This is something I've been thinking about over the past few weeks.
Both were highly under-appreciated while they were here, both left town without bringing a championship, and both groups of fans learned in short order what they had in these "imperfect" players. They both did everything you'd want a player to do for you while they were here, short of delivering said championships.
I know it's not a perfect correlation, as Ewing is probably a bigger disappointment due to the expectations he brought with him from G'Town, but I think it's a fair comparison.
Maybe while we're at it, we can say that Doug Brien = John Starks...
Comparing Ewing to Pennington is a very large stretch. Ewing was one of the best players in the NBA and was named to the top 50 NBA players lists while Chad is an average NFL QB.
Statistically, though, Pennington stacks up pretty well - QB rating, completion %, etc... In fact, his all time numbers may end up being better than Ewing's were when all is said and done.
And Ewing never had a year like this once he left the Knicks.
So, I agree that Ewing was a better basketball player than Chad is a football player - but the fan's reaction to them, and their under-appreciation of them, is what led me to think about this.
And Heaven forbid Penny wins a championship down the road...
