I'm a Jets fan for 36 years now, and I'm happy to say it's the first time I've known a coach on their staff personally. I've known Mike Pettine since 1991, and I know we're getting a quality guy. I work at a newspaper in his hometown, and I covered many games when he was the coach of high school teams in our area. He's a good guy and a very intelligent, hard-working and dedicated guy. His father was one of the greatest high school coaches ever, and he was Mike's biggest influence.

Mike went to Virginia as a QB, but got switched to DB when it was obvious he wouldn't beat out Don Majkowski. He roomed with ex-Jets first-round pick Jeff Lageman one year at Virginia. For what it's worth, he has a brother-in-law who is a diehard Jets fan. He bypassed a chance to come to the Jets when Donnie Henderson asked him to be on his staff, because he felt more security sticking with Brian Billick. In the last couple of years, he became the right-hand man of Rex Ryan. John Harbaugh never even bothered to offer the DC job to Mike, because he knew Mike's primary goal was to align himself with Rex Ryan. They believe in each other a great deal and they're both very hard workers. I'm prejudiced, but I think this is going to work out great for us.

Below is a link to the story in our newspaper, which comes out of suburban Philadelphia. I realize all the New York papers will have it today, too, but here's ours:

    http://www.phillyburbs.com/news/local/courier_times/courier_times_news_details/article/119/2009/january/21/pettine-joins-ryan-sources-say-the-central-bucks-west-grad-will-receive-a-three-year-deal-to-serve-a.html
SWEET! It gets better every day and we haven't even taken the field yet.

This should be exactly what our Defense needs, we get Rex Ryan and his so called right hand man. I was nervous that the D wouldn't have the fire that Ryan defenses are associated with but with Sutton out we can only think that Ryans right hand man will instill Ryan's fire on the Defensive side of the ball.

As long as the offense can run the ball and control the game we will be in the playoffs this year seemingly picking right up from where we stumbled this year!

    Winner, Winner.......Chicken Dinner!
From what I heard/understand, this is a good hire.

Nice to be done with Sutton.
Exactly. We know nothing about this Pettine guy except for what we read. I hope it pays off. I'm on board.

Pay attention to the "right hand man comment"!

    Interesting.

T-I-M-M-Y recently changed his name to Timmy™ and now comes a guy named J-E-F-F.

Actually, its not that interesting. So nevermind.

Thanks for sharing. Dont know much about him other than that he is Rex's right hand man.

I am excited to see what he brings to the table. As long as he shares the same philosophies as Rex, I am excited.

    Great info. JEFF!

Question - Were the Ravens not interested in promoting Pettine within their own organization to DC? I'd assume since that would be a promotion to the same role he's getting with the Jets, and not a lateral move, the Ravens could potentially make a stink about that.

There was some talk that he was a candidate, but it never really picked up any steam because Pettine was expected to follow Ryan all along.

I really like that his background is a linebackers coach, specifically 3-4 OLBs...we have a lot currently invested in that position and now we have a specialist as our d-coordinator.

I don't know that the Ravens weren't necessarily interested in promoting Pettine. It's just that if they had extended the offer to him, he would have been able to choose between the two offers. Harbaugh knew it was Pettine's desire to follow Rex Ryan. Ryan had told Mike a year ago that when an NFL team eventually hired him as head coach, he would bring Mike along as his DC.

Okay, so the Ravens are heading in a completely new direction on defense or do we think they'll promote a defensive positional coach? I'd imagine they're not scrapping their 3-4.

Confirmed during Rex's PC, Randy Lange's blog on the Jets site also says that Pettine is in as the DC, and that Westhoff and Callahan stay. No official word on B-Schott yet, so my guess is he will leave.
