Take a cruise to several of the islands. Leave from Puerto Rico perhaps and spend an extra day before or after. Cruises are the best. You can explore a different island everyday and never worry about finding a good restaurant or getting a reservation.

The British Virgin Islands are really nice. I rented a sailboat and sailed around all the islands for 10 days. They are all only a few miles apart, some completely deserted. Great snorkling everywhere.

I agree, cruises are a blast. But there aren't any decent ones that depart when I have my vacation time... besides I've done it. Want something new.

    That sounds awesome.

I've been devising my plan of how to use my projected wealth at 30-35 years of age to move down to the Caribbean and live the care free, inexpensive life. Realistic? Nah. But it would be sweet!

So... nobody's been to Puerto Rico? No recommendations on where to stay? Or where to eat? Or what to do?

Depends on where you go really.

I've got a co-worker that just got back from Cancun. She said she had a nice time.

It comes down to this, she went to an all-inclusive and didn't set foot off of their property.

IF you are okay with that type of trip, then you are probably fine to go to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta (or Jamaica, or Punta Cana since I've heard the same things about those regions).

IF you want to explore the region, and sample the local food and culture, then I wouldn't go anywhere near Mexico right now. Your wife is right, drug wars and corrupt federales are making it a nightmare to visit there. Not worth the trouble or risk. You can get to the Bahamas or Jamaica for around the same cost.

Me personally, at least for this trip, I want to get out and experience something new. I didn't want to restrict myself to a resort. We plan to go to the rain forest, underground caves, luminescent beach, historic district, etc. while in Puerto Rico... we plan on eating, drinking and dancing out and about in the city... not just going back and forth between the pool and the casino.

Yes I've been there numerous times and had a blast. I like Isla Verde as well as Boqueron, Ponce, Hormigueros et al.
This link has some good info. Be sure to check out the subsequent links at the bottom of the article.
I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I thought Atlantis was a disappointment.

    Overrated, IMHO.
I agree as well, the Atlantis is totally over rated.

One of my best Caribbean Island vacations was the Marriott Resort on St. Kitts. Great gold course right on the water.

If you looking for great night life, St. Kitts is not the place to go. Really laid back island.
