    RB dept. : " Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger reports . . . " ~ ~ ~

Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger reports a team would have to come up with a doozy of a contract -- complete with a "poison pill," to pry Leon Washington away. The Jets organization loves him as a player and person and truly believes he'll make a full recovery from injury.

And since poison pills are perfectly (and inexplicably) legal in NFL contracts, what makes that so hard to achieve? The old 'if he plays more than four games in the state of new jersey he gets a $50MM bonus' clause pretty much slams the door. It hasn't been used since the MIN-SEA slapfest over Steve Hutchinson but what's to stop another team from using it here?

Then what is to stop the Jets from offering a contract mirroring the poison pill, e.g., "if he plays more than 4 games in the State of California"?

Because you have to match the contract exactly - word for word. You can't change any terms.

Plus it also has to clear the league office so most poison pills now are no more then placebo's....
