Height-Weight-Speed 3 Possesses an adequate combination of height and weight. Top-end speed appears to be above-average. He needs to verify his estimated speed in order to improve his draft value as a potential return specialist in the NFL.
Durability 4 "Missed the entire 2005 season with a hamstring injury and missed the first two games of the 2007 season with a hamstring injury in the opposite leg. Applied for and NCAA awarded a sixth year of eligibility in 2009. He also missed 2009 spring with a shoulder injury that required surgery. To his credit, though, Shipley has played in all 13 games each of the past three seasons (2006-08), including 21 total starts and significant touches in the return game as a junior."
Intangibles 2 Versatile athlete. Team player. Battled back from early injuries and has shown a good work ethic throughout.
Wide Receiver specific Traits
Separation Skills 2 "He's a sudden athlete. Shows good burst off the line of scrimmage. Knows how to set up DBs with double moves. Very subtle, crafty route-runner. Displays a very good feel for finding soft spots in zone. Will work back to his QB and understands the importance of sight lines. Doesn't have a lot of experience running intermediate-to-vertical routes. Has room to improve in that area of the route tree."
Ball Skills 1 Ranks among the nation's best in this department. His focus is excellent. He really looks the ball in and makes the tough catches in traffic. He can pluck on the run and consistently catches the ball thrown over his head.
Vertical Speed 3 Does not run many vertical routes. Has room to improve in this area. Top-end speed is good but not elite. He flashes a second gear and the ability to get over the top of man-to-man coverage. Not a huge threat on fade routes/jump balls.
Run After Catch 2 "Much more experienced operating after the catch (and in return game) than he is running vertical routes. Gets upfield quickly. Shows good vision to hit the cutback crease. Protects the ball well. Has some shiftiness to make the first defender miss and displays a second gear to run away from some defenders if he hits a crease. However, is not the type of elusive runner that will wiggle his way through multiple defenders in space."
Competitiveness/Toughness 2 "Shows no fear going over the middle. Does not get 'alligator arms'. Secures the ball, takes the hit and pops right up. Solid effort as a blocker. Uses feet and leverage to get into position. Gives a decent effort to sustain. Not overly powerful at the point of attack and falls off some blocks, though. "
