Thread: Cimini: Some stuff on Pool and Rhodes

a couple quick notes about concussions

    1) there is no proof that a different helmet or mouthguard can prevent a concussion. there is no science to back any of those claims up... it's basically marketing at this point... or personal preference.

    2) concussions are cumulative, meaning after the first, it's easier to get a second... and after a second it's easier to get a third... and so on...

    3) there is no correlation between the size of a hit and a concussion. A guy can take a huge hit and walk away... and later that season take a seemingly minor hit and get concussed.

    4) concussions are easy to hide. It's not like a broken leg or something where you know the guy is hurt and he can't play. Guys get their "bell rung" and go back in the game all the time... and then later they report not remembering the entire 2nd half etc. It's not easy to quantity how concussed some one is or how many times he was concussed

all this adds up to dont expect Brodney Pool to be around for very long... or for this to be an upgrade over Kerry Rhodes

best case they use him like Kerry to cover deep on 3rd and long and let Eric Smith do the work on running downs... and I dont think they are done adding safeties, either in draft or FA. if someone signs Feely, Darren Sharper could be a fit.

one final note depending on what the competition committee says this week there might be further rules about allowing the WR to protect themselves before a hit... so the type of big hits that safeties load up on WR when they just get the ball, might be a penalty next year.

ted washington? okay, just throwing that out there.
His playing time is completely contrary to a guy with 4 concussions

2009 Cleveland Browns 11 games missed final 5 games with concussion
2008 Cleveland Browns 15 games missed opening game with concussion
    2007 Cleveland Browns 16 games
    2006 Cleveland Browns 16 games
2005 Cleveland Browns 13 games missed 3 consecutive games in Nov-Dec due an ankle injury.

    http://www.nfl.com/players/brodneypool/gamelogs?id=POO051141&season=2009

I just do not see how 4 concussions are possible.

    but I did find this

I can only say that if he has had 4 concussions, he was playing injured, and he should consider suing Romeo and Mangina. I wonder where they could have learned that playing a guy with a concussion is OK?

Just because the NFL doesn't want to pay for the new equipment and show their hand in the on going debate on whether or not veteran compensation for those who did not have this equipment should get paid doesn't mean the sport science behind it is bunk.

And an understanding of physics, biology, bio-physics, neurophysics, kinesics, and energy transfer would be helpful before blurting out a half assed rebuttal
My question is how is it possible that the entire NFL world got it wrong that he had 4 concussions? What did he lose time to injury for those other three times? Was he misdiagnosed three times by team doctors?
that quote is from his agent so I would think twice about the concusions

I'd always heard that one concussion DOES NOT mean it's "easier" to get another one. Can you provide a link on that? I'm no doctor, but it seems like that's one of those opinions that seems like it ought to be true, but isn't necessarily.
I used to box, and people liked to say "once you've been knocked out once, it's easier to be knocked out again." Completely untrue. One knockout has absolutely nothing to do with another. Anyone can get knocked out if punched in the right place -- anyone can get a concussion at any time, provided they're hit in the right place. Not sure how it would become "easier" over time.

I'm not... this forum also has an abundance of NFL General Manager's, personnel scouts, and coaches.

The talent on this board is amazing...

I don't doubt that this is the case, at best when it comes to stuff like that.

a dictionary definition of scientific method includes experiments to verify theories

right now all of these are just theories, they dont have the long term data to back up any of these claims. Yes there are smart ideas and yes there has been limited testing but it's marketing at this point.

Until NFL players start using these things in NFL games, using NFL physics and concussions are reduced or eliminated it's not proven science.
