Korean Crisis Escalates As S. Korean Warship Sinks
The 1,200-ton ship -- reported to have 104 crew on board -- began sinking off the coast of South Korean-controlled Baengnyeong Island close to North Korea around 10:45 p.m. (1345 GMT, 9:45 a.m. EDT), an official at the Joint Chiefs of Staff said, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with department policy. There were unconfirmed reports it had already sunk.

South Korea's YTN TV network said the government, which met in emergency session in an underground bunker after the incident, was investigating whether the sinking was due to a torpedo attack by the North.

..another South Korean ship fired shots toward an unidentified target in the direction of North Korea.
Such actions usually are cause for declarations of war. Depending on how the President acts and a US security guarantee with S. Korea, a crisis at now at hand.

Not with 30,000 US soldiers in Korea, most within range of the world's largest concentration of artillery, rocket and missile batteries of North Korea as it is.

Considering that Japan, the other most significant country with an interest in Seoul's security has almost 50,000-70,000 US servicemen based there and the North's insistence in firing missiles towards Japan and over it, we're involved no matter what we might want.

I served in Camp Castle 7 miles south of the DMZ from all of 1992 to early 1993. Back then, these sort of "altercations" were common.

Literally, there were fire fights and boat sinkings all the time. It was never broadcast outside of Korea, but us soldiers knew about all of it.

I don't know if that is still the same today about 18 yrs later.

The Korean War technically never ended. We've just had a 50+ year cease fire.

I just checked every news outlet. (TV)

    They're not saying a word.

For the most speculative media in the country, why not talk about it?

Seoul is saying that its warship probably sank as a result of an internal explosion, not North Korean action:
SEOUL - A South Korean naval ship sank Friday night after an explosion tore a hole in the hull, but officials played down earlier suggestions that it may have been the result of an attack by the North.

U.S. officials told NBC News there was no indication that the boat was attacked, or that the North was involved in any way.
