Correct. Rex has mentioned that having Revis allows him to do things with the defense that he normally wouldn't be able to do. There were breakdowns on the NFL Network a few times last season also.

There's a reason why someone coined "Revis Island" - he's out there by himself more than any other corner in the league.
Revis is a truly great player. If he stays healthy, he will be a Hall of Famer.
...That's how the story goes, yes.

They shade the D, SOMETIMES...or more times than a team would a lesser CB.

So then he was getting help but in appearance only? Is this because Rhodes would quit on it? Or maybe the only plays he got safety help during the season was the Ginn TD, the Sims-Walker TD, and so on?

Great players are usually their greatest when there's other talent around them. It doesn't hurt Revis that the rest of the D was good too, and it shouldn't take anything away since he's clearly a key player in that.
FYI Revis wasn't even on Sims-Walker on the Touchdown, go back and check the tape.

ALSO Does Revis get help over the top here and there? YES However he gets less help than any other CB in the league. Rex has said numerous times he has NEVER had a CB as great as Revis which allows him to be even more flexible with his blitz.

Notice how often we have a DB come off the corner to blitz? Well if were sending 7-8 that doesn't leave much left to help in coverage, can't blitz them and have them over the top at the same time that's why Revis is so valuable because he can allow us to send more blitzers since he can take the best WR 1 on 1.

^^ I realize that. It still doesn't take away from the point that he does recieve secondary help and great players obviously play to another level if everyone else around him is playing well. It works both ways, it's not as if our front 7 isn't loaded with talent.

Dunno that I would say loaded...

We have no true double digit sack guy and there was a lot of people who would have laughed at the idea of Pouha-Devito-Douglas all starting games on our D-line.

Harris is great, Pace is very good, Bart is very good. These guys make the front 7 good. Jenkins is amazing, but he missed his fair share of games last year.

Either way, I've actually been hoping we go front 7 in the draft because it's NOT loaded.

So, out of all the receivers that Revis covered this year, one he apparently didnt cover is knocking his hustle?

Respect from Ocho and silence from the other receivers he played and actually covered this year, as compared to the half knock from a guy that doesnt even have enough game to be covered by Revis?

Love given to Revis by arguably the best corner in the league from Oakland?

But... a half knock from a guy he never covered, cause that guy aint got an A game thats worthy of the Jets, and arguably the leagues, best corner even covering him?

Maybe this guy is good, but... man please!

My bad... coulda summed this all up with this...

you're taking wayy too much offense to people saying Revis can hold his own...(just as i'm probably taking too much offense to someone not wanting to pray to Revis)

You're right that great players are great because of the talent of their company...it's always worked that way in everything; not just football.

But you're slighting Revis by saying that just because he gets cover on top on a few plays a game, its a credit to the others around him...

    1) Revis's ability is the reason our defense was the dominating pass defense in the league last year; not just because of his personal coverage skills, but because of what his presense meant to Rex's defense and to opposing offensive coordinators.
    2) the reason that these receivers feel the need to say something about help over the top, is because it puts Revis on the same level as other cornerbacks, and takes away his elite status...however, EVEN when he does get help, he's still nasty underneath...something that no other corner can say.
    3) Revis was a stud his rookie year, upper echelon(sp?) his second year, and best at his position by his third year....
    4) you brought up his front 7 a few times...that argument wouldn't have worked during Revis' first two years. Rex, Scott, Douglas...these guys are new-comers and their impact on the front seven made the overall defense better, but Revis continued his dominance on the league. He is the one constant, and he's the difference maker.
that's a sh*tload of credit being handed to one guy there
As with any other team-oriented practices, relying on each other is crucial for success. BUT, that doesn't mean that one person can't be far and away ahead of the pack. In fact, that's how they differentiate between team players and leaders.
The fact that you don't want to believe that one guy can deserve that much credit, is the only issue you or anyone else should have with someone extolling Revis' virtues...other than that, its just ignorance; cuz the facts will smack you (or anyone else) in the face.
Yea, it doesn't work one way like that. We have 7 very good starters in our front 7...that's a sh*tload of credit being handed to one guy there.
I meant schematically rather. Revis' ability to take away a larger chunk of the field than most other cornerbacks allows the already immensely talented front 7 with less space to work with for the offense and more looks to diguise in a smaller space and, of course, more heat from from directions. Revis is the cornerback to have in the fun and gun nfl and our best player but the other 10 are obviously more than capable.

Yeah, Revis is great because he plays for the best defensive team....except that he was the best corner in 2008 too, before Rex was even here and the Jets defense was just middle of the pack. He was damn good as a rookie in 2007 as well.

    Ignorant fool.
great point. Revis was good out of the box and then seemingly eased to greatness and here's to Revis, the soon to be highest paid defensive player in the NFL?

As to Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, widely regarded as one of the best cover corners in the game, Sims-Walker said that Revis plays for the best defensive team, and that he has lots of safety help. (Sims-Walker added the CYA caveat "not to take anything away from him" after, of course, taking something away from him.)

Look at it this way, how many times have you heard players from other teams this this about the Jets 'D'.

I'll take it, despite what francessa says.

of course Revis gets safety help. ALL CB's do, to some extent or another, that's what Safeties are supposed to do (hence the name of the ****ing position).

however, as has been stated repeatedly in this thread, Revis is good enough to be left "on an island" at times and gives Rex greater flexibility in terms of blitzes and other defensive adjustments.

to take credit away from a CB due to safety help is moronic, it's just the nature of the position. it's like taking credit away from a QB because he has OL blocking for him.

You and I both know that the only reason the QB is good is because of his OLine...He has no measurable ability outside of his direct correlation to the OLine's ability....
