Dang!!- Clash of Titans not looking great?

    Anyone see it?

Was really looking forward to this one, but the initial reviews (not critics--I tend not to believe them for movies like this, well, pretty much any movie) by movie viewers has not been complimentary.

Rotten Tomatoes is being less than kind--loved this one viewer's remark "The Clash of the Titans remake is the most embarrassing black eye for Greeks since the short-lived McGyro" :D

IMDB and Yahoo viewers have been a bit more complimentary, but not overly effusive.

May have to go anyway, but kind of bummed at the initial reaction.

Come on guys--just give me ONE good review?

    Anyone?

I hate when Hollywood turns a good idea into a crappy movie with all flash and no substance. From the previews, that's what Clash of the Titans looks like. The only movie I'm really looking forward to right now is Robin Hood with Russell Crowe.

    Wait! But it's in 3D!!!

WHOA!!! That's amazing! Such cutting edge technology! 3d man, 3d...just like in the 80's.

Craigslist: VCR for sale. $8,000. Cutting edge technology uses a totally awesome magnetic strip instead of boring old plastic discs. Magnets > plastic...

Yeah, it's like they think 3-D (whoop-de-damn-doo) can cover up a crappy movie.

    Dammit. :steamin:

The guy in my paper was particularly harsh on Liam Neeson as Zeus.

Mentioned about 4 times how he looked like he was just there to cash a paycheck.

I saw the original at the Drive-Inn as a kid, it can't be half as bad as that!!! But then again those claymation scenes were state of the art at the time!!!

Screw it, I'm going to see it tonite. The GF was really looking forward to it, and she hates critics more than me. She said she didn't care what anyone else said, let's just see it and decide for ourselves.

Not like we haven't seen crappy movies before.

All the reviews I've seen have ranged from just bad to horrible. The acting seems to be getting terrible reviews which is amazing considering you have top notch actors like Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes but apparently both of them just took a pay day and sh*t the bed on the screen.

Sam Worthington is a manufactured star who is starting to get overexposed. People can tolerate him in movies like Terminator Salvation and Avatar were he is a lead or has a prominent role but wasn't really expected to carry the movie.

Saw it in 3D, nothing like avatar in that category. Pretty much the same experience as in regular viewing. Major motion pictures are going to start being in 3D because it's an extra 4$.

Overall, would say it's watchable and decent, doesn't live up to expectations. Best parts are from the preview.

Ok, I saw it tonite, and I gotta say, it didn't suck.

Not a ringing endorsement, but I think the viewer reviews it got were a bit too harsh.

The story is the story--not much you can do with it. You can't change what happened and put a twist ending--like the Kraken eats Perseus or Hades nails Andromeda.

It's basically an action film based on an ancient Greek myth and is relatively faithful to the original movie.

A little less cheesy, much bigger effects, but if you liked the original, this isn't a bad redo.

Not Gladiator or Braveheart (which were original stories), but it didn't suck.

Not sure what people were expecting.

the 3d was awful, but 3d is always awful. wish i could have seen it in regular 2d, but i was dragged to it. and i didn't think it was bad. i really like ralph fiennes, and didn't think he did a "mailed it in job," but the character was pretty much a less scary and less cool version of lord voldemort with long hair.

it would have been much better if it was rated r. it's really sad/lame when you can see movies intentionally do things to not get the r rating. kinda like dark knight too.

i just realized the "release the kraken" line will work great throughout the season. if we are down, and it looks like schotty isn't giving sanchez the chance to win the game, i will be screaming at the bar "RELEASE THE SANCHEZ!"

I have a rule of thumb: Never listen to the critics when deciding whether to see the movie. Hell, I don't read any reviews until I've seen the movie because I don't want any outside voice getting into my head for what I'm about to see.

That being said, this movie getting bad reviews should be no surprise.

glad to hear that it didn't suck -- but were you really expecting it to be on the level of Gladiator or Braveheart? :dunno:

    No, definitely not.

Was just trying to convey that when it's not an original story, and they recreate a faithful version to the original myth, it's kind of hard to make it epic--like on the scale of Gladiator or Braveheart. It's not new.

If no one had made that original movie back in the 70's, this might have seemed much better than it was.

Had we not seen Medusa or the Kraken before, maybe it would have seemed more epic.

BTW, saw it in 2D, and you can definitely tell which scenes were intended to jump off the screen at you.

Not sure the gimmick was needed. Probably would have muddled what was happening.

Really hope that fad dies but for the most necessary 3D type movies. Saw a poster for one of those teen faux ghetto dance-off movies in 3D.

    Really?

Can't wait for Fast and the Furious 9 in 3D.

    got it.

i guess what i was trying to say is that, even if it was an original, it wasn't made with the same intent as a Gladiator/Braveheart epic. Clash seems more like an action movie rather than a semi-historical epic drama like those other two.

300 is a good example of that. kick-ass movie, but never in the same class as Gladiator/Braveheart. original or not, i expected Clash to be much more like 300.

    You're probably right.

Btw, if you liked 300--they story itself, you should pick up Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield.

In my top 5 historical fictional novels of all time. Given to a bunch of friends and they've all loved it. A great great read. My brother--an ex-Marine fighter pilot tells me that it is now required reading in the Marines. Although he is as big a bullsh*tter as me, I don't doubt it.

Didn't expect too much out of the movie so I wasn't dissapointed. Still, the acting wasn't too good and some parts looked like it was off the Disney channel. Wondered why the djinn character was necessary - I thought he looke a scaled down Megatron, also the Kraken's head looked suspiciously like the monster from Aliens

Best character I thought was Draco leader of the guard, he was Le Chifre in Casino royale.

Speaking of Pressfield, loved that book but my friggin nephew took it and pretends to be deaf when I remind him the bastid. Check out the Afghan Campaign as well.
