Clemens wants to start -- somewhere

http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/news/story?id=5069633

"There's no future for me here starting, that's clear," Clemens told Jane McManus of ESPN NewYork.com. "There's a future for one guy here to star and play and that's Mark [Sanchez], and that's why they drafted him. And he's a very talented quarterback. So I'm not at the point where I'm willing to give up my dream of having a chance to play and start."

Yeah. Good luck with that, Kellen.

If I was ever as bad at my job as Clemens is at his, I'd have been in the streets a long time ago.

Call it a case of massive informational inefficiency that KC still a professional football player. I'd pay him to be an Oregonian cattle rancher, but sure as hell not any type of American Football quarterback.

I think what needs to happen for Clemens to have a chance to go elsewhere is the following series of events:

Jason Taylor has to decide not to sign, which would then probably mean that Mark Brunnell would sign. At that point, Clemens becomes expendable.

We don't need Brunnell. He's 40 years old. Just let Clemens, Ainge & O'Connell battle for the 2nd string position.

I agree, though it appears the FO has a differeing opinion.

I liked Brunnell in his day and I don't think it would be the end of the world if Brunnell were the Jets' 2nd QB. But his day has passed. I would prefer Clemens as the #2.

We need somone to mentor sanchez on the nuances of being a qb in the NFL. I'd rather have brunell doing that than any ofvthe other guys on the roster. As far as playing the qb position, brunell would be 3 or 4 on the depth chart if Clemens leaves

In related news.......

A source close to Mark Brunell told The Post yesterday that the veteran quarterback would very much like to sign with the Jets, but has his hands tied until Taylor makes up his mind.

That's because the "Final Four" rules only allow the Jets to sign an unrestricted free agent if they lose one to another team, and then at roughly the same first-year salary of the departing player.

In the Jets' case, they only have one such slot available at $1.5 million in the first year after losing kicker Jay Feely to the Cardinals. And that slot is currently reserved for Taylor.

Brunell is eager to sign with the Jets after spending the past two years as Drew Brees' backup in New Orleans, where the left-handed Brunell won a Super Bowl ring last season but threw just 30 passes combined as a Saint.
A three-time Pro Bowl pick in the 1990s, Brunell turns 40 this fall and is well past his prime but is viewed by the Jets as a competent replacement were Mark Sanchez to go down.

Brunell's arrival would put Kellen Clemens' future with Gang Green in limbo, but Brunell can't sign with the Jets for the time being unless Taylor spurns them or they unexpectedly lose another unrestricted free agent.

But an unpublicized provision in the league's "Final Four" and "Final Eight" signing restrictions could end up helping the Jets -- particularly in terms of Brunell.

A league spokesman confirmed that the Jets and the seven other teams in the divisional round last season will be free July 22 to sign unrestricted free agents and do so at any salary level, regardless of whether the "Final Eight" teams lost an unrestricted free agent of their own.
The only stipulation is that the unrestricted free agent was not tendered a contract offer by June 1 of at least 110 percent of his 2009 salary by his previous team.

The Saints haven't shown much interest in bringing Brunell back because of his age, and a source close to Brunell said the veteran passer would be open to waiting until July 22 to sign with the Jets.

Brunell spoke to the Giants last month about a potential Jacksonville reunion with ex-Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin, but the Giants signed Jim Sorgi instead.
