Anyone else impressed by the Raiders draft thus far?

Rd 1, Pick 8 (8) McClain, Rolando LB
Rd 2, Pick 12 (44) Houston, Lamarr DT
Rd 3, Pick 5 (69) Veldheer, Jared OT
Rd 4, Pick 8 (106) Campbell, Bruce OT
Rd 4, Pick 10 (108) Ford, Jacoby WR
    Rd 5, Pick 7 (138)
    Rd 6, Pick 21 (190)
    Rd 7, Pick 8 (215)
    Rd 7, Pick 44 (251)

Rolando McClain might be a slight reach for a ILB that high, but talk about getting a good pure football player.

Follow that up with trading up for Lamarr Houston, which is a steal IMO. He was just as productive last year as Gerald McCoy.

They continue with taking two of the most athletically gifted tackles in the 3rd and top of the fourth. Neither are set to start, but both have LT potential and not many prospects from college do.

Then they take the kid with the fastest 40 time at the combine, Jacoby Ford, to give that WR corps someone down-the-field speed.

Normally I hate the Raiders, but they've gotten so pathetic that I find myself rooting for them to turn it around so I can hate them once again. Either way, I think this draft might be the best draft I've seen the Raiders have in the past decade.

Good news since the Patriots have their first round pick next year.

Agreed, very nice job so far and they had a few trades in there as well which is unusual.

I really like the McClain pick but the rest aren't so good... Houston is OK.

Veldheer is awful and so is Campbell. Those picks were both wastes.

Very solid draft by the Raiders so far.

I about fell out of my chair when McClain was announced. Finally the Raiders took a guy in the Top 10 that deserved to be there.

Houston was a nice pickup in the 2nd round as well. I also can't fault them for the Campbell pick. The guy has immense potential, he just wasn't a 1st round prospect and never should've been considered one.

    Jags are this year's Raiders.

Broncos had a good go at it too, with the Tebow pick.

I don't know.they don't have a good history in drafting good players.checkout their past history.

Raiders always trade back to get extra picks, they just don't ever do in the first round. They still have never traded back in the first round.

I think they did very well for themselves in those first 4 rounds, and with the Jason Campbell trade. They improved their team quite a bit over that span.

They're still not a playoff team, but perhaps they can save themselves the dignity of not giving the Patriots a Top 10 pick at least.

PS: I would like them a lot more if they were willing to have some real competition for DHB's starting job. Nothing against the guy, but you should have to earn your gig, and so far he hasn't.

Raiders very well could be a playoff team in 2010.Schedule alot more friendly this year. First they have stabilized the most important position(QB) . Campbell is an upgrade to Bruce Gradkowski.(fits system much better) . Jason Campbell #17 QB ... 2009, 327- 507, 3618, 64.5, 7.14, 84, 20, 15, 43, 86.4 ...

Second they made it priority on defense to stop the run. You want to be a very good defense you must first stop the run. All the Raiders moves this offseason whether in freeagency, trades and the draft has been fixing this problem.(thats why Kirk Morrison was shown the door) Raiders defintely have a plan and they are executing it. We will see how Raiders line up. ( they say they won't be a 3-4 defense but all the moves they have made scream alot 3-4) Lamar Houston will play LDE and not DT.

Third is they think they have upgraded the oline. That is the most critical area and will go along way toward telling if they are a playoff team. First there Olineman must stay healthy. You can't have the injuries they had on oline last season and expect any better results. Second there center Satele starting to play alot better as the season went on- His shoulder started to get stronger and it just takes time learning the zone blocking scheme). Third they should have better depth. Gallery lost for the year and Langston Walker proved he could play either guard position . Getting rid of Green at RT and soon to be Cooper Carlisle at RG will go along way to fixing those problems.
LT Mario Henderson( was diffrent player with gallery playing next to him) LG R gallery C Samson satele RG Langston Walker/ Bruce Campbell RT Khalif Barnes / Veldheer
Raiders aren't finished on the oline yet, I expect them to add another olineman in the second wave of Freeagency. (maybe Justin smiley when he cut)

Four Raiders young WRs corp has a year of experience(not to many rookie Wrs come in and have instant sucess). Chaz Scilens and Louis Murphy should be the starting Wrs. Jacoby Ford should be slot reciever. Hue Jackson whose calling all the shots on offense will work DHb in the mix. Wouldn't supprise me if Raiders maybe add T Owens to the mix. Te they are excellent shape with Zach Miller and Brandon Meyer(shown he can play)

Fifth Raiders seemed to fix the nickel CB position that has been a problem for years. Two Cbs they drafted were drafted to fill that role. Routt plays alot better outside but was forced to play inside against the slot reciever. I think Routt ready to take his game to the next level opposite N Asomugha.
Like Asomugha(before he took off) Routt had alot of ticky tac fouls called on him last year. Alot time that was just tight coverage . The thing he must improve his tracking of the football on the deep pass.

Al Davis was tied up and held in a cave during the draft.

Raider, you sound like Greg Papa.

    Good luck this year.

No al Davis pulled some smart deals during the draft. Like QB Jason Campbell who he might have got for free. The Washington COULD get a 2012 fourth round draft choice . IF one of these two things happen. Jason Campbell makes a probowl next season, or Raiders make the playoffs next season. If neither happen Raiders own the Redskins nothing.

It's almost as if they made old Al sit in a corner for the first three rounds and then told him to have at it.

Not really, I thought their draft was pretty average but better than their last few awful efforts

Hey Gil, The Raiders had a pretty good draft this year suprisingly but what else do they need to make a run at the playoffs and what grade would you give their draft

    Gil Brandt, NFL.com
Bryan, I spoke with Mr. Davis yesterday and I told him I thought they had a very good draft -- Oakland and Seattle probably had the two best drafts.

They got a very good run defender in their top pick, Rolando McClain. They got their return specialist in Jacoby Ford. Jared Veldheer will be tried at tackle and possibly center. Bruce Campbell will be tried at right tackle or right guard. They got Jason Campbell for next to nothing, and then extended his deal.

As far as competing for a playoff spot, if campbell performs well -- and I think he will -- then they are right there now.
