    Joe Klecko ~ ~ ~

Speed Dial : Most grueling game
    June, 26, 2010 - by Tim Graham

Let's have another "Speed Dial," where I call three people from my Rolodex to get their insight on a particular subject.

Today's question : After watching John Isner and Nicolas Mahut play their epic, 11-hour Wimbledon match, "What do you recall from the most grueling game you played in ?"

~ ~ Former New York Jets defensive lineman Joe Klecko on a 1983 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Shea Stadium:

"It was a knock down, drag out. It was a game they had to win, and we were hoping to win to get into the playoffs. The Steelers were a bruising team. They were the kind of team that when you woke up on Monday morning, you knew you were in a war. I remember the game being extra heavy because of who they were. We were a young team and up and coming, but we didn't really know where we were yet. This was a big test for us.

"I faced Mike Webster all game. I didn't get a break anywhere I went. I remember going into the complex for ice baths for two days. It was the toughest game I've ever been in. You don't recover for a couple weeks, and if you play a smash-mouth game two weeks in a row, it would take its toll. A game like that, it's a two- or three-week recovery."

Ha ha ha...no one had it tougher than Richard Todd in that game. Mike Webster wasn't beating his ass, but the fans were.

"Hey, you ever do that again I'm gonna kick your @ss right here in front of everbody. You either fight with me or leave me alone" -Joe Klecko

What a dominator. It's ridiculous that he and Winston Hill aren't in the HoF.

When you consider his ability, attitude and his toughness he's probably the greatest to ever wear the green and white.

    +1

The guy was a strong as an ox. I don't know that we have had a man on the line that strong until Big Jenks and Jenkins has a good 100 lbs. on Klecko. Pound for pound one of the (naturally) stongest/stoutest guys who played. Who else has stood out at three positions on the line like him? This man should be in Canton.

GangGreen author Gerald Eskenazi "who is this Ball of Lard?":steamin:

    Is this guy freaking retarded?

Joe Klecko was all Muscle & probably the second strongest & toughest NFL
    Player of his generation.

I mention Randy White as number1 bec. He beat Joe Klecko in a boxing match
several yrs ago. I saw it & you can watch it on youtube.

Ive met Joe Klecko several times at games & just recently He & MarkG. did a card show at Queens college.

Joe talked with me about WHY he's NOT in the ProFBHoF.

1st He said "NewYork Bias" & 2nd "Politics"

I know That the Jets organization{Politics} needs to do more!
They retired his number 73 start a campaign website etc.
I told Joe If he played in a SuperBowl He would prob.be in already.

GOD BLESS Joe he's a great person & a real credit to NY JETS!

    ~ ~ most probably true :(
alot of folks are very " anti-new york ".
johnson is one of the newer owners so he is not considered one of the " good old fellas " amongst the other owners.
it's suppose to be based on the player's performance/production in the nfl but
alot of times there are other " issues " that factor into it.
    ugggh

I believe that was the Jets last game at Shea & Terry Bradshaw played well
to beat us in his final game.

    Webster is now deceased RIP
