Cano gets extra credit for putting those numbers up while playing a premium position, at a gold glove level, but he's going to have to settle for a Silver Slugger, Gold Glove, and hopefully his 2nd World Series ring. Cabrera and Hamilton are having beast seasons.
Do you think he had gauldy stats like the 1B, 3B, DH and COF sluggers?
He won because he had very good stats for a second baseman and played solid defense, because his team won and he was viewed as the catalyst, and because there was no anti Yankee bias in the media to contend with either.
If you apply the same standards to Cano, he's having a better year than Eddie Gaedel did that year, his team has the best record in baseball, he has played Gold Glove defense, and he has most definitely been the catalyst.
However unlike Midget Mac he DOES have the anti Yankee bias to contend with and ESPN will not be actively promoting his candidacy every nite like they did with the Mayor of Munchkin City.
To be fair, Pedroia also won because it was a real down year for the MVP. Usually voters just look at RBI's and go that route, but that year there was no big RBI guy. Quentin probably would have won that year had he not gotten hurt.
The braves lost a 1-0 game earlier this year because Melky tripped and fell when going back for a deep fly ball and it ended up being an inside the park home run. As a Braves fan I would give that deal back in 10 seconds, even though Vizcaino will be in the BA top 30 next season.
The old “Get rid of Billy so Whitey and Mickey can flourish” trick.
I remember some oldtimer calling the FAN...he says "if Melky and Cano spent as much time preparing for the game as they do performing their stupid handshakes for the TV cameras in the dug out, the Yanks would be up by 10 games"
To call the change in Cano since Melky left "dramatic" is an understatement.
