Summer, 28 years ago...

commercial free summer of 1982 :chillin:

I know I'm not the only guy that jammed that station on the way out to OBI
Then, in June 1982, the station flipped to AOR as WAPP "New York's Apple".
The station was initially commercial-free during that summer.
During it's brief stint as rock, Jon Bon Jovi sent a demo tape to the station for it's ameteur band contest - and won - and the rest, as they say, is history.
Great station that summer. I remember they played nothing but Stones the whole day on Jagger's birthday.

Nice, I remember 103.5 back in the day. Also listened to Z-100 (100.3) before it turned to TOTAL garbage and I think 95.5 WPLJ. Ahh such memories growing up in Westchester... :D

OBI. Wow, what memories.

Strangely, I think I went to the Boardy Barn 2X as many times as OBI and I can't remember much of anything that went on there :D

At first I thought that said Wopp and was an all italian station or something.

In college I used to get some FM station from Spokane Washington up here in Canada. I think it was called the Zoo. That station almost seemed like it was programmed just for me as it constantly had songs I liked and very few commercials.

I remember how much variety they played, despite being commercial-free. Although they seemed to play "Last Chance" by Shooting Star almost every day. You guys have reminded me how much NY radio sucks these days. Thank god for Sirius.

In 1982, Doubleday bought the station, and that June, the station switched to an Album-oriented rock format similar to WPLJ and WNEW-FM down the dial. The station was renamed "The Apple 103.5", with the call letters WAPP. The station went commercial-free for the duration of that summer, and as a result, it became the highest-rated radio station in New York City. Then, when the station added commercials, listeners switched back to WPLJ and WNEW-FM, and so ratings went down. In 1983, when WPLJ switched to a CHR format, the station's ratings got a slight boost.
In 1983, a then-unknown Bon Jovi visited WAPP 103.5FM "The Apple". He spoke with the D.J., Chip Hobart, who suggested Bon Jovi let WAPP include the song "Runaway" on the station's compilation album of local homegrown talent. Bon Jovi was reluctant but eventually gave them the song, on which Bon Jovi had used studio musicians to play on the track "Runaway" (which was written in 1980). WAPP worked with WOR-TV (now WWOR-TV) in nearby Secaucus, NJ on a music video show, Rock 9 Videos, for a short time in 1984.
As 1984 progressed, WAPP's ratings were on the upswing. However, the station's owners decided to change the station's format to CHR that fall. They felt that if stations that they owned in Washington, D.C. and Minnesota could do well with the format, then this station could as well. This would not be the case, as the station could not compete with WPLJ or Z-100, and their ratings fell. Not even a change back to a rock format in the summer of 1985 could solve the station's ratings woes.

1982?

No way, man. No one moved my dial from WLIR. Talking Heads, baby! I was stalking honeys at Jones Beach humming that "Muscles from the Shell" tune. It was Cool to be a Cat.

I fell in love with WNEW, no formats, not a speck of cereal. By 1978, WPLJ and a couple others went to the "Boston - Journey - REO Speedjackoffs" rotation. That was the end of those stations for me.

I might feel bad if you guys were to say that WAPP played Black Sabbath all the time.
