The Jets 53 man roster- NY Daily News

Jets 53-man roster taking shape »
    By Manish Mehta

The Jets trimmed their roster to 53 players this morning (excluding Santonio Holmes). According to sources, the following players were waived:

WR Larry Taylor, FB Jason Davis, S Emanuel Cook, LB Brashton Satele, C Robby Felix, S Keith Fitzhugh, LB Tim Knicky, DE Jason Lamb, LB Boris Lee, DT Ty Steinkuhler, OL Chet Teofilo, DT Martin Tevaseu, LB Ricky Foley, DB Bo Smith, WR Brooks Foster, T Dan Gay, OL Michael Turkovich, LB Cory Reamer, OL Charlie Tanner.

Rex Ryan said Thursday night that LB Josh Mauga and S Don Warren would not make the team, either. Some of the released players will certainly land on the practice squad after they clear waivers. Also keep in mind that somebody will be cut once Darrelle Revis returns to the roster. When that will be, of course, is uncertain.

The team could also cut one of the players below if they decide to pick up another player on waivers tomorrow. In other words, bubble players like RB Chauncey Washington, WR David Clowney and DB Brian Jackson aren't necessarily safe in the long run.

Here's the 53-man roster. For now. (The team will have an official announcement on the cuts later today after the league's official 6pm deadline).

QUARTERBACKS (3): Mark Sanchez, Mark Brunell, Kellen Clemens

RUNNING BACKS (5): Shonn Greene, LaDainian Tomlinson, Chauncey Washington, Danny Woodhead, Joe McKnight

FULLBACKS (2): Tony Richardson, John Conner

WIDE RECEIVERS (4): Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards, Brad Smith, David Clowney (Santonio Holmes doesn’t count against 53-man roster until he returns from his 4-game suspension). Woodhead can also play WR.

TIGHT ENDS (4): Dustin Keller, Ben Hartsock, Jeff Cumberland, Matt Mulligan

OFFENSIVE LINE (8): Nick Mangold, D’Brickashaw Ferguson, Brandon Moore, Damien Woody, Matt Slauson, Vladimir Ducasse, Rob Turner, Wayne Hunter

DEFENSIVE LINE (6): Kris Jenkins, Sione Pouha, Shaun Ellis, Vernon Gholston, Mike DeVito, Matt Kroul

CORNERBACKS (6): Antonio Cromartie, Kyle Wilson, Dwight Lowery, Marquice Cole, Brian Jackson, Drew Coleman

SAFETIES (4): Jim Leonhard, Eric Smith, Brodney Pool, James Ihedigbo

LINEBACKERS (8): David Harris, Bart Scott, Calvin Pace, Jason Taylor, Bryan Thomas, Jamaal Westerman, Kenwin Cummings, Lance Laury

SPECIALISTS (3): K Nick Folk, P Steve Weatherford, Longsnapper Tanner Purdum

RESERVE/DID NOT REPORT LIST: CB Darrelle Revis, QB Erik Ainge

    INJURED RESERVE: Ropati Pitoitua (Achilles)

    Jets waived WR Brooks Foster.

He didn't last long. The 2009 fifth-rounder was just claimed off waivers from the Rams in late August. He was a fringe prospect to begin with, so don't expect him to re-emerge as a fantasy prospect.

    pretty interesting comparison

Mehta published the 53 man roster for the Daily News

Cimimi wrote an article about the turbulant preseason, hard knocks and how the Jets underperformed in every way for the espn ny toilet bowl he now lives in

    Exactly.

The only way I can picture Woodhead getting any type of playing time is if L.T goes down with an injury.

It was rumored that he was expected to, but it looks like he made it after all.....for now, at least.

Why 4 TEs? Hartsock is terrible why is he even still on the roster. The Jets could line turner up if they need a blocking TE Harsock isnt even that great of a blocking TE. They can also line Conner up as a TE.

If you roll the tapes back to last year and watch them, you will find that HARTSOCK greatly assisted our team in the run game. Mulligan and he are the two best blocking TEs on the Jets. Cumberland is a huge guy and will learn how to block. Dustin is coming along in his blocking.

Bullcrap. Washington certainly outplayed McKnight but Woodhead is a more versatile and valuable player on our roster.

    Respectfully disagree.

If I gotta choose between a "jack of all trades" or a "pound the rock" (based on our current 53) I'm choosing the latter.

washington pounded the rock against backups. woodhead has actually played and has contributed positively to the team.

Nothing against Woodhead, but Washington is the better player. Because of his size, he's automatically a more valuable special teams player.

Washington is the better halfback, but Woodhead is far more versitile, with his ability to play slot receiver as well.

Which of them is better for the team depends on what the other roster needs are.

Personally, I like them both, although I think I like Woodhead better as the 4th/5th receiver than halfback. I think the real question is Woodhead vs. Clowney once Holmes comes back.

I agree about Woodhead being more versatile. But, I'd still keep both Washington and Clowney over him. However, I do believe Rex will keep him on the 53.

I predict that Danny will make a handful of huge plays that help us win games.

Few if any catches. No TDs, that must mean he's terrible. Keep in mind, these are football experts around here.

Why do so many on this site take Danny Woodhead so personally?! It's like if Woodhead doesn't make the team, there's some sort of conspiracy happening ... I guess if you're relatively small ... and white ... and you have a reputation for over-achieving, this entitles you to a roster spot.
Don't get me wrong, I like Woodhead - I think he's a great athlete who's worked his ass off. But I've rarely heard anyone criticize the guy ... people have just pointed out the fact (yes, it is a fact) that there are more talented running backs on our roster. But my goodness, you'd of thought people were ripping the guy up and down ... my only problem is this - just stop cheering for a guy because of the color of his skin ... it doesn't matter ... and don't lie now and say this isn't why many of you root for him. If he were a little black guy, nobody would care.

This ^. Bottom line if the rest of the NFL talent evaluators who have had a few cracks to get their hands on him don't care he's not special. Good news is that we can always stash him on the PS, while someone like McKnight would get picked up by another team.
