General Manager Mike Tannenbaum didn’t divulge whether he believes holdout Darrelle Revis will re-join the team by the Monday season opener against the Ravens on Sept. 13.
“Darrelle’s not here and we’ll plan accordingly,” Tannenbaum said on a conference call after the team trimmed their roster to 53 players. “We feel good about our depth at corner. We have six guys that we think that can help us. That’s what we’re going to be moving forward with.”
“Organizationally, we have to move forward,” he added. “We’re playing Baltimore in a little over a week. That’s what we’re prepared to do… We feel good about the roster we have. Over course of 16 game season, there are a number of players who are going to be unavailable (with) injuries (or) a contract issue…. I don’t know if anyone’s ever whole. You look at Ed Reed and Calvin Pace, those are two really good players…. They’re down a great player. We’re down, obviously, two really good players as well.”
Tannenbaum didn’t get into specifics of the negotiations, citing the confidentiality agreement with the Revis camp.
“Rex wants to play man to man on the back end,” Tannenbaum said. “Depth at that position was a necessity. Obviously without Darrelle here, that necessity gets exacerbated.”
ON PUTTING IN WAIVER CLAIMS: We’re about 2,000-3,000 calories away from finalizing this roster. I would expect that we would. Those are due tomorrow at noon. So we’ll be here for quite a while today.
ON JOE MCKNIGHT: Obviously, he was a little bit more inconsistent than we had hoped in the preseason. But he’s going to get an opportunity to be on the roster. We’re going to go from there. I think our 45-man roster is going to look different week in and week out. There’s going to be a number of spots that are going to be up for grabs in practice. Joe’s going to have to go out there and earn it. We feel good about the research we’ve done on him. He’s going to have to earn a spot on the 45-man roster. It’s going to be up to him to step up to that challenge.
ON RB CHAUNCEY WASHINGTON: He’s just a real powerful guys that can run thru tackles. He’s remained productive in the kicking game. We’re very excited with how he played especially toward the end of preseason.
ON CARRYING FOUR TIGHT ENDS: We feel dramatically better than where we were a year ago when we felt like we had Dustin (Keller) and wound up getting (Matt) Mulligan and (Ben) Hartsock during the year. We feel very good about Jeff’s (Cumberland) future.
On ERIK AINGE - Erik Ainge is not on our 53-man roster. We have his right right now. If and when there’s a decision to be made, we’ll address that at the appropriate time. Right now, there’s really not much to discuss there.
ON DAVID CLOWNEY - If he can become more consistent in the kicking game even replacing a guy like Wallace Wright, then the security will be enhanced. With that said, he provides an explosive element for us. We’re moving forward with him. What happens after that, we’ll see.
