Phantom 1st Down video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWxo3sAxtYc

The way it played out, the Jets never really had an opportunity to challenge the spot.

Because the spot was correct!

Is there any way to challenge an imbecilic ref?

(The same ref precipitously signaled another 1st down on the same drive, if I remember correctly.)

No challenge is necessary. The HC need only ask for a measurement.

I believe that it is totally discretionary as to whether the refs will grant a measurement or not and if they have signaled 1st down and started moving the chains they will probably not listen to the defensive team calling for one.

that was total crap

Pitt ended up with the first down, instead of it being 2nd and 2.

the next 2 plays were incomplete pass and then a sack.

Pittsburg never should have had the touchdown in that drive.

Its amazing I have heard nothing on ESPN today about it , the only thing I have heard was that the jets were given a gift by a "no call" on a defensive holding on the last drive..

While I agree the phantom first down was total BS...you can't say they would not have scored on that drive faced with a 2nd and 2 instead of a first and ten.

How do we know they would have called the same two offensive plays?
How do we know the Jets would have called the same two defensive plays?

Plus - we couldn't stop them on 3rd and 18 and then again on 3rd and 24.

What makes you think we could have prevented a 1st down on a 2nd and 2 play?

When does he ask for a measurement?

Both teams had lined up for the 2nd and 1 play, and before the next snap was allowed, the yardsticks were moved.

I know there is a mark kept at the start of the drive, but how can you go back and do a measurement if the yardsticks have already been moved upfield?

considering what the "1st down" play was, it looks like Pittsburgh might not have been aware that they were given the 1st down, as they threw the ball to where the old 1st down market should have been. So in reality, it might have been Pittsburgh that got screwed using their first down on a crap play, thinking it was 2nd in 1. Obviously nobody but Pittsburgh knows for sure, but I am pretty sure they would have gained a first down on a 2nd and 1 eventually. Not to mention the fact that Suisham is their kicker, so they very well may have gone for it on 4th and inches.

yeah, not sure who the Pitt WR was, but he had Cro in a good hold to get that pass through to the corner.....

Also, no holds on the Pitt Oline... WOW what a crisp game they played....
