Does anyone here play the cello?

    Is it hard to play?

What about an upright bass? And really, what's the difference between the two?

Not hard, unless you're in a marching band.

A bass is plucked.... like you will be if you insist on pursuing the Cello as a hobby and telling us about it.

    :D

My fingers are too big and clumsy to play a guitar. I thought a cello might be easier.

A few octaves difference. I recommend taking up the mountain dulcimer.

A bass guitar or an upright bass would work with big hands.

Interesting fact; WCO has small hands.

    :dunno:

Love the cello; my youngest got started in 6th grade; played all the way into HS. Now it just sits in its handsome case.

Why not try? Probably would be great for you. Soothing the Savage Beast; you know.

I don't know. I guess I could rent one to try it out... I imagine they are incredibly expensive.

So, you started this thread for what reason?

Your not sure if you want to try the cello?

Might as well have started a thread called Cawk.

    That's correct.

I wonder if it's difficult to play.

    I play a few instruments.

To me, keyboards are the easiest, bass guitar next, and regular guitar is the hardest. So, I'm guessing that a stand up bass would be similar to a bass guitar - probably a bit easier.

I played it for 10 years up until I graduated high school. It's a fun instrument but i switched over to guitar about 2 years ago. I wondered about the difference myself. The guitar is harder to me but I was also capable if reading bass clef so it can skew my opinion. You would definitely need lessons in my opinion only because there are no frets and finger placement is so critical for the intonation. Stand up bass is boring and easy. Might not be a bad idea to learn that first but the cello is much more versatile.

Rocking some elanor rigby or metallic sounds cool.

$1500...steal a watch from SAR, buy the cello and put a downpayment on a CHurch's Fried CHicken Franchise.

It's all open skies for you, pally.

lol, you really are a dick. Double bass is insanely tough sledding. My bassist sends me home after 90 minutes, 45 of which is spent smoking cigarettes. This dude is 6'7" and has plenty of stamina.
