WSJ/NBC Poll: A Donald Trump Surprise

Text By Jonathan Weisman and Scott Greenberg

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney appears to be the early front-runner in the largely unformed race for the Republican nomination for president, but real estate magnate Donald Trump may be a surprise contender, according to a new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll.

Among Republican primary voters, Mr. Romney captured the support of 21% in a broad, nine-candidate field. Mr. Trump was tied for second with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, with 17%. House Speaker Newt Gingrich got 11%, just ahead of former Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin’s 10%. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, considered a strong contender by political handicappers, remains largely unknown, with just 6% support. Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota had 5%, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum 3%, and Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour with just 1%.

Mr. Trump “may be a punch line but when he talks about the way to solve our problems, he makes a lot of sense to the average guy out there,” said Todd Mauney, a conservative Republican in Weatherford, Texas. “I don’t know if people can get over him being the butt of every joke but for me, he can be serious when it’s time to make real decisions.“

In a narrower field of five candidates, excluding Mr. Trump but including Messrs. Gingrich, Pawlenty and Barbour and Ms. Bachmann, Mr. Romney comes out with a comfortable 20-point lead, 40% to Mr. Gingrich’s second-place 20%. Mr. Pawlenty had 12% and Ms. Bachmann 11%. Mr. Barbour, a former Republican National Committee chief and chairman of the Republican Governors Association, has a powerful fund-raising network and a vast Rolodex of contacts, but he has yet to catch on with primary voers. He garnered 3% of the support of those polled.
It's way too early for any serious polling

Trump would actually be a better candidate than Mitt the Flip-Flopper and Mike "Willie Horton part deux" Huckabee.

    Agreed.

Trump would have the best chance of beating Obama.

Trump already has the Presidents people running scared on the birth certificate issue.

Trump's background will kill him. Every person he's lied to and f'd over will be in out in force. The guy is a pompous azz.

CNN poll with even better news for Trump.

More interesting thing is the fact that Huckabee has been polling well for a while now, and it doesn't look like he's running.

I know it's early, but every poll has Trump polling well. WSJ/NBC, CNN, and now Gallup.

Sounds like someone has a wee stiffy for the "Trump for President" idea.

I can't stand the guy, he spends more time on Obama's birth certificate then anything else.

karl rove is absolutely right, Trump is a joke candidate

there's no way this dude can win, and the longer the right wing plays with this idea the further they are getting away from a real candidate

for what it's worth, NBC hasn't even considered what do to about the apprentice show cause they believe this is just promotion and Trump's tv show priorities are far more important than his Presidency priorities...

also Trump is known as a deadbeat in high finance circles. He can't pay his debts, his deals are often disasters and he claims he's a lot richer than he really is. If he released his tax records his candidacy would be over.

Guilty as charged. I'd love to see him in a debate at least.

Anyone heart about the Jerry Senfield fiasco. The Donald's response was hilarious.

I'm not on the vote for Trump pedestal but I don't see how an extremely low estimation of $788 million would end his candidacy :i_dont_kn
North Folk Bank valuing him at $1.2 billion, and Deutsche Bank putting that number somewhere around $788 million.
I hope he runs he could have an entire series of the apprentice to see who becomes his running mate.

i dont know how real that number is... and here's another question how does a casino go bankrupt? It's a casino.

He applied for loans at both banks. That's what they valued his assets at. This was Spitzer's findings as he tries to continually spar with Donald via the radio...
